NOW PLAYING AMERICAN SNIPER Polo Park, St. Vital. 14A. 133 minutes. Bradley Cooper portrays the Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, the “ deadliest sniper in U. S. history.” The story is very much in director Clint Eastwood’s wheelhouse, springing from his career as an actor portraying a gallery of mythic heroes, and then as a director, deconstructing those figures to reveal tortured flesh- and- blood men. Kyle, whose reputation for heroism and his outsize tally of kills during the war in Iraq earned him the sobriquet “ Legend,” is an Eastwoodian hero if there ever was one. š š š 1/ 2 CINDERELLA Grant Park, Kildonan Place, McGillivray, McGillivray VIP, Polo Park, Polo Park Imax, St. Vital, Towne. G. 106 minutes. Kenneth Branagh directs a ( more or less) live- action rendition of the Cinderella, But the lovely and fundamentally uninteresting Lily James as Cinderella is no match for the venom exuded by Cate Blanchett’s evil stepmother. For all its refinement, Cinderella drags when it should skip as lightly as its title character when she’s late getting home from the ball. š š 1/ 2 ( Reviewed by Ann Hornaday) CHAPPIE Grant Park, Kildonan Place, McGillivray, McGillvray VIP, Polo Park, St. Vital. 14A. 121 minutes. A robot ( played in motion- capture mode by Sharlto Copley) is stolen and reprogrammed to counter an oppressive mechanized police force in this futuristic thriller co- starring Hugh Jackman and directed by Neill Blomkamp. Wrongheaded in conception, eye- rolling in execution, Chappie is a childish blend of the cute robot goofiness of Short Circuit and the bloody- minded mayhem of RoboCop . It never finds its sweet spot and never, for one moment, works. š ( Reviewed by Roger Moore ) THE DUFF Polo Park, St. Vital. 100 minutes. Quirky high school senior Bianca ( Mae Whitman) discovers that she is considered a “ Duff” ( an acronym for “ designated ugly fat friend”) and sets about redefining herself to win the heart of her crush, with the help of the same obnoxious jock next door ( Robbie Amell) who labelled her. As much as the film attempts to follow in the Easy A template, it lacks its satiric edge and its willingness to confront high school hypocrisy head- on. In fact, the whole plot machination wherein Bianca seeks the approval of her abuser is sufficiently unsettling as to give Fifty Shades of Grey a run for its money. š 1/ 2 FIFTY SHADES OF GREY Kildonan Place, McGillivray, Polo Park, St. Vital. 18A. 126 minutes. A student ( Dakota Johnson) investigates enigmatic billionaire Christian Grey ( Jamie Dornan) and is seduced into his kinky lifestyle in this adaptation of the potboiler bestseller. Appropriately set in a big- business, corporate milieu, the film has a ruthless obligation to deliver some sado- masochistic thrills for no other reason than that spanked bottoms equals augmented bottom line. Think: Last Tango in Paris as written by a Harlequin romance hack. š 1/ 2 FOCUS Grant Park, Kildonan Place, McGillivray, Polo Park, St. Vital, Towne. 14A. 105 minutes. A seasoned con artist ( Will Smith) takes a promising newcomer ( Margot Robbie) under his wing to teach her the tricks of the trade, only to get them both embroiled in a risky scam involving a dangerous race- car magnate ( Rodrigo Santoro). Co- directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa give the proceedings the high gloss of a luxury- car commercial in an effort to offset the film’s toxic levels of avarice with some visual glamour. The assumption is the combination of Smith’s charm and Robbie’s beauty will somehow con the audience into getting onside with characters who are, on a fundamental level, reprehensible people. š š THE IMITATION GAME Grant Park. PG. 115 minutes. Benedict Cumberbatch gets his best screen role as Alan Turing, the genius credited with breaking the German Enigma code during the Second World War ( as well as being the father of the computer), but who found himself being harassed after the war due to his homosexuality. The shocking story is told in a sombre but dramatically devastating fashion by director Morten Tyldum. š š š š JUPITER ASCENDING Polo Park. PG. 128 minutes. Mila Kunis plays a humble young earthwoman who discovers she is heir to an intergalactic industrial kingdom, and sets about to face the ruthless current ruler ( Eddie Redmayne) with the assistance of a half- canine warrior ( Channing Tatum). While consistently ludicrous, noisy, overproduced and downright campy, there is a certain wackiness about Jupiter Ascending that makes it entertaining in spite of itself. š š KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE Grant Park, Kildonan Place, McGillivray, McGillivray VIP, Polo Park, St. Vital, Towne. 14A. 129 minutes. A street punk ( Taron Egerton) with formidable survival skills comes under the wing of a suave secret agent ( Colin Firth) recruiting just such a likely lad in an impending battle with a crazed tech genius ( Samuel L. Jackson). Since this comes from the director, screenwriter and graphic novel author who gave us Kick- Ass, expect some over- the- top comic book violence and perverse wit, and not just gently goosed Bond tropes. š š š 1/ 2 THE LAZARUS EFFECT Polo Park, Towne. PG. 84 minutes. Medical research into bringing the dead back to life yields horrific results when a scientist ( Mark Duplass) uses an experimental serum on his electrocuted fiancée ( Olivia Wilde) and she comes back... different. Duplass’s presence might fool you into thinking this may be some kind of indie- horror- comedy in the template of Baghead ( 2008), the nerve- scraping comedy Duplass himself co- directed with his brother, Jay. But the story is dismayingly ordinary, and its execution by director David Gelb ( Jiro Dreams of Sushi ) is virtually devoid of invention. š š McFARLAND Towne. G. 129 min. A teacher- coach ( Kevin Costner) attempts to transform a team of promising but disadvantaged athletes into a winning track team in this drama based on a true story. The inspirational sports movie is a reliable genre, and director Niki Caro handles it more competently than usual. But it’s Costner who anchors the film with quiet, dignified work. No other actor out there so effortlessly suggests the game of life is best understood on its playing fields. š š š PADDINGTON Polo Park, St. Vital. G. 96 minutes. Based on the beloved children’s books comes this movie about the adventures of a civilized young bear from “ Darkest Peru” who comes to London in search of a new life. A tentative adoption by a safety- obsessed patriarch ( Hugh Bonneville) helps until our hero becomes an ursine of interest to a wicked taxidermist ( Nicole Kidman). The animation effects may be state- of- the- art, but this is disarmingly charming and very much in the tradition of your more eccentric English family entertainments. š š š 1/ 2 RUN ALL NIGHT Kildonan Place, McGillivray, Polo Park, St. Vital, Towne. 115 minutes. 14A Liam Neeson plays Jimmy, a mobster whose loyalties shift when his longtime friend and associate ( Ed Harris) puts a hit out on Jimmy’s own son. Neeson and Harris deliver considerable gravitas as friends turned mortal enemies. However, one’s head aches a bit from all the tech trickery and a particularly percussive soundtrack. š š 1/ 2 THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL Grant Park, McGillivray, Polo Park. PG. 123 minutes . In this sequel to the 2011 hit, the elderly English residents of a hotel in India experience various romantic upheavals simultaneous to the upcoming nuptials of the hotel’s ambitious owner Sonny ( Dev Patel), complicated by the arrival of a mysterious American ( Richard Gere) with designs on Sonny’s beautiful widowed mom ( Lillete Dubey) Very much on par with the original, it’s representative of a certain kind of old- fashioned, handsomely mounted melodrama featuring an array of colourful characters, well performed. As in the first film, when the going gets a little too soapy or overly maudlin, the cast of mostly old pros elevates the material with the sheer force of their collective skill. š š š 1/ 2 THE SPONGEBOB MOVIE: SPONGE OUT OF WATER Kildonan Place, McGillivray, Polo Park, St. Vital, Towne. G. 93 minutes. Everyone’s favourite phylum Porifera travels to our earthly domain to retrieve a secret recipe, a task that necessitates his defeating a ruthless pirate called Burger- Beard ( Antonio Banderas) in this comedy based on the animated series. If “ nautical nonsense” and SpongeBob’s fingernails- on- an- underwaterblackboard voice are something you wish, drop off the kiddies and give ’ em some cash. š š š ( Reviewed by Roger Moore ) STILL ALICE Grant Park. PG. 102 minutes. Julianne Moore deservedly earned her best actress Oscar prize as Alice, a New York linguistics professor afflicted with early- onset Alzheimer’s. It’s a too- pretty but still affecting drama co- starring Alec Baldwin and Kristen Stewart. š š š 1/ 2 UNFINISHED BUSINESS Grant Park, McGillivray, Polo Park, St. Vital, Towne. 18A. 91 minutes. A small business owner ( Vince Vaughn) travels to Europe on a make- or- break business deal with his two associates ( Tom Wilkinson and Dave Franco), only to get caught up in a whirlwind of misadventure, including a sexfetishist convention and a global economic summit. The movie never works up enough momentum to get us into the anarchic spirit of things, unfolding choppily as a series of half- hearted set pieces written and directed with little flair or commitment and no connective tissue between them. š š ( Reviewed by Jon Frosch ) . . .
