F ROM selling 50/ 50 tickets to performing for the audience, members of the Repeta family have been involved at Rainbow Stage in all sorts of capacities. Gwen Repeta first began volunteering at the theatre company 12 years ago when her eldest daughter, Jade, performed in its production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat . Jade, now 22 and an accomplished singer, actor and dancer based in Toronto, has performed in seven other Rainbow Stage productions since then. Meanwhile, Repeta has maintained her involvement at the outdoor theatre, which is located in Kildonan Park. “ I just stayed on volunteering because it’s fun,” said Repeta, 57. “ It’s a way for me to give back to something that gave ( my daughter) a leg up in the industry.” Repeta has sold 50/ 50 tickets as well as merchandise. This month, she volunteered as an usher for Rainbow Stage’s production of West Side Story . “ I love that I get to see the shows,” Repeta said. “ The other thing that I love is the sort of spirit or air around the arts community.” Repeta first got a taste of the city’s arts community when Jade began appearing in theatre productions as a child. Now that Jade has grown up and moved away, volunteering at Rainbow Stage is a way for Repeta to maintain the passion she’s developed. “ I like theatre, and I like the arts, and I like the community of people,” she said. “ I enjoy being a part of that.” Last summer, Repeta recruited her youngest daughter, Ebony, to join her at Rainbow Stage. “ My mom told me there were extra volunteer slots, and I thought it would be something interesting to do,” said Ebony, 16, a Grade 11 student at Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute. “ It was just a good overall experience.” Being able to spend time with her mother was also a factor in her decision to get involved. “ It’s something we can do together,” Ebony said. “ It’s fun.” Renata Echtenkamp is the front- of- house manager at Rainbow Stage, a job that includes co- ordinating the company’s volunteers. Although she has only been in the role for a year, the Repetas have already made an impression on her. “ They are great volunteers,” Echtenkamp said. “ They bring this fun and lively atmosphere to Rainbow Stage and it’s just infectious.” Rainbow Stage currently has 170 volunteers and would like to increase that number for its upcoming productions of Les Misérables in July and Sister Act in August. Repeta encourages people to get involved, particularly if they have an interest in theatre. “ You learn things about the arts community that you never knew,” she said. “ It’s being part of a community that a whole lot of other cities don’t have.” “ It’s an enjoyable experience, and it’s well worth it,” she added.
