Search your attics! Bring your
treasured wartime memorabilia to
Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site.
Meet military history and conservation
experts on Sunday, July 26 to discover
the fascinating history of your objects
and learn how to preserve them for
generations to come.
Stroll through Lower Fort Garry’s historic
grounds as you partake in a journey to
commemorate Canada’s contributions to the
World Wars. See the vintage military vehicles up
close, speak to the owners and learn how these
vehicles helped Canada’s war efforts.
Visit the Provisions Canteen so you can have
your war cake and eat it too as you sip tea and
watch the women’s war era fashion show.
Try your hand at relaying secret war strategies
on an authentic Ham Radio. “ CQ CQ”. Will your
message win the war?
Step back in time and listen to the Winnipeg Jazz
Orchestra Jazz Trio as they perform songs that
were popular overseas and on the home front.
Watch a variety of short films to learn more
about how Canada contributed to the war
effort. Did you know that on February 19, 1942
a group of actors made Lower Fort Garry into a
Nazi prison camp for Manitoba’s If Day, which
helped Manitoba Raise $ 65 million towards
the national war bond effort? Visit the building
where Winnipeg’s Mayor, Manitoba’s Lieutenant-
Governor and Premier were held “ captive”.
Imagine the Union Jack normally soaring high
over the Fort being replaced with the dreaded
Swastika. See the film, hear the proclamation,
and know that “ it must not happen here!”
Step up patriots and get your Canadian Forces
cap badge airbrush tattoo as you join our World
Wars commemoration. Have the kids show off
their victory bond button and other historic
military inspired crafts to all their friends.
Hear about a soldier’s ration of chocolate from
Mars Canada Inc. and sample freshly made
hot chocolate.
Enjoy your day learning how Lower Fort Garry
was both unique and important beyond the fur
trade and how much more history there is to be
explored within these walls.
Bring the family and join Parks Canada, The
Central Museum of the Royal Regiment of
Canadian Artillery, Prairie Command, and The
Costume Museum of Canada from 10 a. m. to 5
p. m. as we commemorate the 100th anniversary
of the First World War and the 75th anniversary
of the Second World War; we know We’ll
Meet Again.
