Mike was predeceased by his parents Maksym and Tecla Bodnar; his beloved wife Marion; his sisters Anne Tanchuk and Elsie Dahl, and his brothers Joe Bodnar and John Popko. Mike is survived by his many nieces and nephews and their families. Born in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, Mike was a hardworking man with a gentle soul. In 1942, Mike enlisted in the army and served as a Gunner until discharge in 1945 for what was then known as “ shell shock” ( PTSD) having served active duty in heavy artillery. Although Mike shared very little of the atrocities he faced while he served on the front lines of Italy and the United Kingdom, we know he endured much suffering during that time and would continue to suffer the resulting affects long after the Second World War. In 1947, Mike married his sweetheart, Marion Bandura, and the young couple moved to St. Catharines, Ontario to begin their life together. In 2002, we had the honour of bringing Mike home to Winnipeg where he would live out his remaining years, surrounded by the love of his brother John; sister Elsie; and their families. We cherished our time with our adored uncle, and he especially enjoyed his visits with his great nieces and great nephews, over a McDonald’s coffee and hamburger. We will miss his gentle ways and his sweet smile. We would like to thank the staff at Rosewood Village and Deer Lodge Centre ( Tower 7 and Tower 5) for the devoted care they provided to Mike over these past several years. Mike’s care teams often spoke of his endearing nature, and Mike was just as fond of all the staff who helped him live his life with dignity and value. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, July 15, 2015, at 7: 00 p. m. at Wheeler Funeral Home, 1800 Day Street in Transcona, with Father Sam Argenziano officiating. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Helen, parents, Charles and Collette Puttaert, and brothers, George and Raymond. Dad was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. It was in his early years that Dad learned the value of integrity, hard work, perseverance and dedication to family. These are qualities he carried his entire life. Upon graduation from high school in 1943 at the age of 17, Dad joined the Navy. He followed in the footsteps of his two older brothers who were already serving with the Canadian Forces in Europe. In 1945, he met his future wife, Helen, at the Winnipeg Beach Dance Hall while on leave from the Navy. After the war, Dad returned to Winnipeg to continue his education. He attended the Angus School of Commerce and the Dale Carnegie Public Speaking Course. In 1946, he started his career with Canada Packers. After 41 years with the company he retired from his position as Manager of the Processed Meats Department. Dad and Helen were married on September 10, 1948 and made their home in Winnipeg. They were married 67 years. Family was very important to Dad. He worked hard to provide for his family. Like his father he was a do it yourself type of man. He always had ongoing projects around his home, and at his Falcon Lake cottage. He was even making plans last week. He has left a wonderful legacy to his family through his beloved Falcon Lake Cottage and his life endeavours. He especially enjoyed family times that included many great summer holidays at Clear Lake, Rushing River, and Falcon Lake and winter trips to Florida and Mexico. Another one of his great enjoyments was fishing expeditions with son, Doug, family, and his Canada Packers co- workers. He was a wonderful father and husband. His family will miss him dearly. Rest in Peace, Dad. We love you. Thanks to the nurses and doctors at the Health Sciences Center and Victoria Hospital for their compassionate care. Special thanks to Dr. Lowden, his family physician, for your longtime care of Dad.
