SACRAMENTO, Calif. — After 43 years in prison and 30 parole hearings, parole officials on Thursday again decided it is safe to free Charles Manson follower Bruce Davis. They recommended Davis be paroled in the 1969 slayings of musician Gary Hinman and stuntman Donald “ Shorty” Shea. It’s the fourth time for such a recommendation, but the 72- year- old Davis remains imprisoned at California Men’s Colony in San Luis Obispo. The previous three such recommendations by the Board of Parole Hearings were blocked, once by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and twice by Gov. Jerry Brown. Brown most recently rejected Davis’s parole a year ago, saying he remains dangerous despite his age. It will be about five months before Brown decides on Thursday’s recommendation. “ I am pleased that the board again followed the law and did the right thing, and I am hopeful that the governor will do likewise,” Davis’s attorney, Michael Beckman, said by telephone after the hearing. Davis was not involved in the notorious killings of actress Sharon Tate and six others, but Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney John Morris said the lesser- known slayings are plenty to keep him behind bars. “ The heinousness of the crimes held Southern California in the grip of fear for months,” said Morris, who heads the district attorney’s parole division and drove to San Luis Obispo to oppose Davis’s parole. “ The reason for the crimes was to incite the race war of Helter Skelter . Manson interpreted the Beatles song to symbolize an Armageddon- like war between whites and blacks. He convinced some of his followers the killings would help spark the war and benefit his “ family” of disciples. Since his conviction, Davis has become a born- again Christian who earned a doctoral degree in philosophy of religion and ministers to other inmates. — The Associated Press Manson follower could get parole NEW YORK — A former franchisee alerted a Subway advertising executive in 2008 about her concerns about pitchman Jared Fogle, according to her lawyer. Cindy Mills exchanged phone numbers with Fogle after they met at an event, said Robert Beasley, a lawyer who represents Mills. After Fogle began talking about paying for sex with minors, Beasley said Mills alerted a regional Subway contact in Florida where she is based. Later, she alerted Jeff Moody, who was in charge of the Subway Franchisee Advertising Fund Trust, he said. Subway did not respond to a request for comment Thursday. The company has previously said it does not have a record of Mills’ complaints, which were previously reported by Business Insider . The publication initially kept Mills’ identity anonymous at her request, but identified her Thursday. — The Associated Press Subway knew about Jared Bruce Davis C LEVELAND — Hillary Rodham Clinton on Thursday drew parallels between terrorist organizations and the field of Republican candidates for president when it comes to their views on women, telling an audience her potential rivals were pushing outdated policies. Clinton did not mention any specific terrorist or militant groups, such as the Islamic State, which has held women as sex slaves in Iraq and Syria. “ Now extreme views about women? We expect that from some of the terrorist groups. We expect that from people who don’t want to live in the modern world,” Clinton said. “ But it’s a little hard to take coming from Republicans who want to be the president of the United States, yet they espouse out- of- date and out- of- touch policies,” she added at a rally in Cleveland. “ They are dead wrong for 21st century America.” Republicans swiftly accused the Democratic presidential front- runner of directly comparing the Republican presidential field to terrorists. “ For Hillary Clinton to equate her political opponents to terrorists is a new low for her flailing campaign,” said Republican National Committee spokeswoman Allison Moore. “ She should apologize immediately for her inflammatory rhetoric.” Clinton, seeking to become the first woman to win the White House, said she took it “ a little personal when they go after women,” pointing to Republican efforts to cut access to women’s health centres and opposition to abortion rights. She specifically cited Sen. Marco Rubio, saying he “ brags about wanting to deny victims of rape and incest access to health care and abortion,” and former Florida governor Jeb Bush’s opposition to funding for Planned Parenthood, a nonprofit abortion provider. Clinton also turned her attention to home state Gov. John Kasich of Ohio, telling supporters he had banned state funding for some rape- crisis centres because they sometimes referred women to other health facilities that provide abortion services. Kasich’s campaign shot back in a statement, saying, “ Ohio and our country deserves better than what Clinton is offering them. Hillary Clinton’s trail of scandal is decades long and only continues to worsen.” Clinton has made issues such as equal pay for women, abortion rights and early childhood education a key part of her campaign. The former secretary of state has also defended Planned Parenthood in the wake of undercover videos released by anti- abortion activists that show officials discussing how the organization sometimes provides fetal tissue to medical researchers. — The Associated Press Clinton equates terrorist views with Republicans By Julie Carr Smyth and Ken Thomas DAVID RICHARD / THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Hillary Rodham Clinton mugs for a photo with supporters Thursday in Cleveland.
