What happened to both in the Rangers’ 6- 5 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night was so unexpected. Tolleson walked two of the first three batters he faced before Troy Tulowitzki had a game- tying RBI single with two outs. The Blue Jays scored the go- ahead run on four- time Gold Glove third baseman Beltre’s throwing error after fielding Josh Donaldson’s high chopper. “ I just yanked it. ... I knew I had time, so I wasn’t rushing or anything,” Beltre said. “ I didn’t have time to grab it like I wanted to, but I had time to get the out. No doubt, this one’s on me.” Tolleson ( 5- 3), who had converted 25 of his 26 save chances coming in, threw 13 balls in his 24 pitches. Tulowitzki had a 3- 0 count and had already flipped his bat away on a pitch that was called a strike even though it looked out of the zone. Tulowitzki then fouled a pitch off before looping a single to left. “ I was just missing up and away,” Tolleson said. “ It stinks. It’s not fun to lose, and it’s not fun to lose like this.” Texas still holds the AL wild card spot, but its advantage over the AL West rival Angels shrunk to a halfgame after Los Angeles beat Detroit. The Rangers had their three- game winning streak snapped, but have still won nine of 12. Toronto is 20- 4 since acquiring Tulowitzki in a trade with Colorado last month. The Blue Jays took a one- game lead in the AL East after the New York Yankees lost 15- 1 earlier Tuesday to AL West- leading Houston, which leads Texas by 4 ½ games. Tulowitzki had hit only .218 in his 22 games with the Blue Jays before his three singles. He is hitting .287 overall. “ He’s starting to get some hits the last couple of games. He’s one of the best players in baseball, has been for a number of years,” Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. “ He had that chance tonight. Right guy, right time.” LaTroy Hawkins ( 3- 1) gave up three singles in a scoreless eighth before Roberto Osuna worked the ninth for his 15th save in 16 chances. Rougned Odor homered, had an RBI double and scored another run for the Rangers. Delino DeShields also homered for Texas. Odor, whose 11th homer was a solo shot in the second, left the game just before the start of the seventh inning. He lost the fingernail of his middle finger on his right hand while warming up at second base. Shin- Soo Choo, who has reached base in all 29 of his starts for Texas since the all- star break, had a single in the first and scored on Beltre’s triple. Choo singled in the ninth, but was stranded when Beltre struck out to end the game. TRAINER’S ROOM Blue Jays: Rookie 2B Devon Travis had another cortisone shot in his injured left shoulder after being examined by a team physician Tuesday. He hopes to get back in the lineup this season… RHP Marcus Stroman, out all season with a right- knee injury, will throw another simulated game Friday. Rangers: CF Leonys Martin, sent to the minors three weeks ago, will have surgery today to remove the hamate bone from his right hand. ... INF Jurickson Profar, out since shoulder surgery last off- season, has joined Low- A Hickory and could possibly begin a rehab assignment as a designated hitter over the next few days. UP NEXT Blue Jays: LHP David Price, 2- 2 with a 7.36 ERA in five career starts at Texas, makes his fifth start for Toronto since his trade from Detroit. Price is 12- 4 overall, including a 3- 0 mark and 1.78 ERA for the Blue Jays. Rangers: RHP Colby Lewis goes for his career- high 15th win, which would match the AL lead. Lewis has won six of his last seven starts. — The Associated Press Tulo the hero as Jays best Rangers Osuna closes deal after ninth- inning rally gives T.
