Tenders THE owner of a medical marijuana shop is vowing to fight criminal charges — possibly while acting as his own lawyer — as part of a service he feels he owes the community. Glenn Price made his first court appearance Thursday. The matter was adjourned until Sept. 3. He was charged with possession and trafficking of marijuana, along with proceeds of crime, following an Aug. 4 raid on his Main Street business, Your Medical Cannabis Headquarters. “ If I can’t raise enough money ( to hire a lawyer), I’ll defend myself,” Price said on the steps of the downtown Law Courts. He was surrounded by a handful of supporters and former customers, including one man who made a point of lighting up a joint as a woman tried to pull him out of camera view. “ I opened this shop to give back to the community, not to put money in my pocket,” said Price. He vowed to keep fighting “ as long as I can keep educating the people of Winnipeg.” Security was noticeably increased for Price’s appearance. Four uniformed police officers were posted inside the courthouse, while several sheriff’s officers followed Price and his group into the courtroom. “ Don’t shut ’ em down, man,” one passerby yelled in support as Price spoke to media. “( Expletive) the cops,” she added. Another supporter stood by closely, wearing badges that stated “ Legalize Marijuana” and “ I Love Elizabeth May” in reference to the leader of the federal Green Party od Canada. Price has reopened his medical marijuana shop at 1404- A Main St. simply for “ information only.” He said the only thing he is now dispensing is knowledge and advice, not drugs. He has also started a petition he intends to deliver to city council to encourage it to hold hearings about medical marijuana dispensaries being allowed in Winnipeg. Price opened the medical marijuana dispensary July 1 and has a business licence from the province. Although Price said he only sells his product to adults who have prescriptions and who go through an assessment process with the store, he is not licensed by Health Canada to sell medical cannabis, meaning his operation is illegal. Police ordered him to stop sales on July 14, only two weeks after he started. He was made aware he risked being arrested if he continued to sell the product. It is illegal to operate stores that sell medical marijuana in Canada. D ID that $ 4,580.50 cheque you got in the mail from the OnField company recruiting you to be a mystery shopper seem too good to be true? It’s a scam, Better Business Bureau watchdogs in Winnipeg, Halifax and Houston warn. “ We had an investigation here that was very similar. People lost $ 1,500 to $ 3,000,” Manitoba BBB president and CEO Len Andrusiak said. “ There is no listing of OnField as a business anywhere in Canada and the U. S.” While OnField lists a business office address in Moncton, N. B. — a bank is on that site — there is no record for the company, said Jody McArthur, a BBB investigator in Halifax. “ We’ve been dealing with other secret shopper scams lately.” OnField sent the cheque and recruiting letter to a Winnipeg home, the envelope bearing a return address of a Mississauga, Ont., post office box. The letter included the company logos for McDonald’s, Safeway, Walmart and Shoppers Drug Mart, and explained the recipient was being offered well- paying work to be a secret shopper at major chain stores. OnField would activate the cheque once the recipient had taken certain unspecified actions. OnField listed its office locations in Juarez, Mexico; Houston, Texas; London, England; and a fourth- floor suite on Yonge Street in Toronto. The Toronto address is a now- vacant former automobile dealership. Recipients were instructed to call assignment co- ordinator Michael Beasley at a Toronto number. Beasley answered the phone Tuesday, but hung up as soon as a caller identified himself as a reporter. “ These are very concerning. We want to act on them as quickly as possible,” said Alex Robertson from Walmart’s Canadian headquarters in Mississauga. Walmart’s website addresses mystery shopper scams on its website. It lays out how people get scammed out of thousands of dollars when they transfer money as directed and they’re left with the original worthless cheque: http:// corporate. walmart. com/ privacy- security/ fraud- alerts/ mystery- shopper. “ It’ll bounce a few days later,” said Safeway official Betty Kellsey from Calgary. “ We’ve had a number of issues with ‘ grandparent’ schemes, ‘ sweepstakes’ schemes. This is the first one like this we’re aware of,” Kellsey said. “ We alert the stores to be on the watch for similar frauds and schemes.” Houston BBB official Leah Napoliello said her office has not checked out OnField’s alleged local office, but has no record of the company’s existence. OnField also claimed to be a member of the Mystery Shopping Providers Association, a global organization of more than 400 legitimate mystery shopping companies. Not so, MSPA North American president Rich Bradley said from Orlando, Fla. “ They are not a member of any MSPA chapter,” said Bradley. “ Unfortunately, scammers just steal logos, names of legitimate corporate executives and our association logo, and try to steal money from unsuspecting consumers.” nick. martin@ freepress. mb. ca A word to the wise Mystery shopping is a legitimate global business, but beware of scammers, warns Rich Bradley, Orlando, Fla.- based North American president of the Mystery Shopping Providers Association: This is what they advise: . Never pay to shop for anyone. A legitimate company will not charge you a fee to do shops. . Never accept a cheque in advance. A real company will ask you to sign up on its website and will contact you when it has a gig. If you accept it, they will walk you through how to do the shop and tell you what it pays. Most shops pay about $ 20, although some are less and some complicated ones ( including recorded video shops) can pay hundreds of dollars per assignment to veteran, established shoppers ( not strangers doing their first shop). The shopper will do the shop, submit any receipts for reimbursement per the instructions ( usually not more than the cost of a meal or so), and receive payment in about 30 days for a timely and properly submitted report. . Never shop for any company that is not a member of the MSPA.
