ELSIE SARAH MCDONALD ( nee GRIFFIN)
October 13, 1921 - August 7, 2015
It is with great sadness that we announce the
passing of Elsie McDonald at Rosewood Lodge
in Stonewall.
Elsie leaves to cherish her memory, her
daughter Marian and son- in- law Ray Assels,
grandsons Drew, Trevor ( Haley), Kris ( Inga)
and great- grandchildren Noah and Kira; sisters
Ruth Gee, Muriel ( Don) Taplin, brother George
( Jean) Griffin, sisters- in- law Gwen Griffin,
Beatrice ( Lionel) Kuran and many nieces and
nephews.
Elsie was predeceased by her husband of 42
years, Ross McDonald, in 1992; parents, Reg
and May Griffin, brother Jim Griffin, brotherin-
law Bill Gee, sisters- in- law, Sadie ( Leonard)
Claydon, and Margaret ( George) Martin.
Elsie grew up on the family farm in
Woodlands. She had many happy memories of
her childhood there. After acquiring her
teaching certificate she taught in Gunton and
Stonewall. While teaching in Gunton she met
and later married Ross McDonald in 1950. She
worked alongside Ross on the McDonald
homestead while they raised their daughter,
Marian. Later she returned to teaching in
Teulon, retiring in 1980. Nothing made her
happier than when a former student recognized
her and complimented her on being their
favourite teacher.
Elsie was a lifetime member of the Teulon
Agricultural Society and for many years
entered her baking, sewing, knitting, flowers,
canning, and vegetables, etc. Over the years she
received countless ribbons and prizes for her
entries in the Teulon and Stonewall Fairs. A
large vegetable garden and numerous flower
beds were Elsie’s pride and joy. Her endless
efforts resulted in an award winning yard.
After retiring from teaching Elsie filled her
time learning new hobbies. She enjoyed taking
pottery and carving lessons. She taught herself
to paint along with her good friend, Gladys
Paul. With the arrival of three grandsons, her
life took on a whole new meaning. She always
looked forward to their visits and was thrilled
when Marian, Ray and the boys moved back to
Manitoba in 1992.
In 2001 Elsie moved off the farm and took up
residence at Lions Manor in Stonewall. She
enjoyed her years at Lions Manor until
declining health required that she move to
Rosewood Lodge. We would like to thank the
staff at Rosewood Lodge for the care and
compassion they gave to Elsie and her family
during her final days.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday,
August 13, 2015 at 11: 00 a. m. at MacKenzie
Funeral Home Stonewall, Manitoba.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make
donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the

JOHN UNGER
November 3, 1941 - August 8, 2015
It is with deep regret that we announce the
passing of our beloved John Unger.
He will be deeply missed by the love of his
life, his partner, and wife Sandra Allen- Unger.
He also will be missed by his children Jim
Unger ( Kelly), Lisa McRae ( Ian), stepchildren
Carrie ( Gary) Weinheimer, Kim ( Brian) Hyshka,
Mike ( Gaylene) Allen and t10 grandchildren. He
will also be missed greatly by his sister Tillie
( Ron) Lozinski. Also brother Raymond Unger
and sister Pat Loades. John had many nieces,
nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles.
He was predeceased by his father Henry in
1951 and his mother Sally McNeilage in 1999.
John and Sandra had the great pleasure of
traveling extensively and made many friends
along the way. John also had friends that he
kept in touch with from his very early years.
John was a very warm and sociable person and
would strike up a conversation with anyone that
he would run into.
One of John’s last wishes was to be able to go
home once more and to sit outside on his front
landing and “ hold court”. He loved to begin his
day sitting on the front landing and have
tea/ coffee with our very special neighbour
Tammy. He would converse with all who came
along, be they neighbours or strangers.
Unfortunately he passed away before this small
wish came to be.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday,
August 13 at 10: 00 a. m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral
Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg. All
welcome to attend.
If friends so desire, donations may be made
to the Winnipeg Humane Society or a charity of
your choice in his honour.

JANE PHILIPS
It is with great sadness that the family of
Jane Philips ( nee Grimble) announces her
peaceful passing, with her husband and
children at her side, on August 7, 2015.
Jane was born October 25, 1926, in Winnipeg,
the fifth of six children born to Florence and
Sidney Grimble. Growing up, she enjoyed going
to the family cottage at Delta, and the many
pets - ponies, goats, dogs and cats - the family
cared for at their home on Oakdean Boulevard.
As a young woman she worked for John Deere,
Royal Bank, the Bay, and at Canada Trust,
where she met the love of her life, Bill Philips,
and they married August 1, 1953. They moved
to Gimli in 1964, and then to an acreage on
Lakeside Road in 1976. She loved her long
walks amongst wildflowers and birds, and
planting a large garden each spring. She was a
devoted member of the Gimli Hospital
Auxiliary and was made a lifetime member in
1989; she was also a founding member of the
Gimli Anglican congregation.
Jane and Bill enjoyed 13 years as snowbirds
in Apache Junction, Arizona, where they made
many new friends and delighted in the warm
weather, the beauty of the desert, and the
camaraderie of fellow retirees from across
Canada and U. S. Jane was a naturally lighthearted,
emotionally intelligent, generous
person who loved being with family and
friends.
She leaves to mourn her husband Bill,
daughters Susan Philips ( Mike Cava), Jan
Goddard ( Dave Goddard), Elizabeth Philips
( Doris Larson); grandchildren, Kaitlin
Marowitch, Christopher Goddard and Jill Cava;
sister Martha Innes, nieces and nephew, and
beloved dog Maggie. She was predeceased by
her parents, brothers Henry and William
Grimble, and sisters Mary and Sarah Grimble.
The family would like to thank Gimli
Homecare and the many workers who helped
Jane remain at home for so many years, as well
as the staff of Betel. A celebration of her life
will be held 2: 00 p. m., Wednesday, August 12 at
the Gimli Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers,
donations may be made to the Canadian
Diabetes Association, Gimli Hospital Auxiliary
or the charity of your choice.

EDWARD GEORGE PRINCE
February 6, 1950 - August 6, 2015
It is with great sadness we announce the
passing of husband, father, grandfather, greatgrandfather,
uncle, brother and friend on
August 6, 2015.
Ed leaves to mourn his loving wife Anna
Marie of 30 years. His sons, Ken ( Lori), Albert,
Tim and William ( Brittany). Special young men
whom he called sons, Adam Hildebrandt and
Cecil ( Charmain) Prince. Daughters Ashley
( Cody), Angela ( Nelson). Brothers John,
Maurice ( Betty), Alvin ( Darlene) and Wayne,
and his sisters Thelma, Alice and Jean, and the
Thomas family who he grew up with,
grandchildren, special grandkids Abigail and
Eliana, great- grandchildren, nephews and
nieces, cousins and numerous friends.
Ed started working at an early age in Virden,
MB in carpentry then later he worked in the
mines up north in Lynn Lake, and from there he
worked on the reserve for a while. He later got
a job with the Federal Government in what they
used to call Manpower. From there he went on
to driving trucks and then the bus lines. He
leaves a legacy of songs which we love to hear
on the CDs he had made. He loved the fact that
all his children had special talents, Ken with
mechanics and bus driving; Albert with his
ability in music and his driving trucks; William
with his musical ability and singing. He wanted
the best for his kids and wanted Ashley to
continue in her education in the medical field.
He loved praising all his children up for their
achievements. Ed and Ann and the two grandkids,
Elie and Abby enjoyed their daily evening
rides around the community or to other areas.
The family expresses their gratitude for your
kindness and support through prayers and
deeds and for your attendance at the service.
Thanks to the Peguis Child & Family Services,
Peguis Chief & Council, Percy E. Moore
Hospital, The Fisher Ambulance, Anderson
Family Funeral Home, and to all the
organizations that donated to the family. A
special thanks to daughter- in- law Lori Sinclair
who was with Dad when he walked out of this
world into eternity with the Lord, and the many
community members for their donations, love
and support. Thank you all and may the Lord
Bless and keep you all.

In Memoriams
MELANIE DAWN
SMITH
October 2, 1977 -
August 11, 1993
We do not need a
special day to bring
you to our minds,
The days we do not
think of you are very
hard to find.
Each morning as we
awake, we know that
you are gone,
And no one knows the
heartache though we
have to carry on.
Our hearts still ache
with sadness and
many tears still flow,
What it meant for us
to lose you, nobody
will ever know.
Our thoughts are always
with you, your
place no one can fill,
In life we loved you
dearly; in death we
love you still.
Death leaves a
heartache no one can
heal...,
Love leaves a memory
no one can steal.
Love
Dad and Mike
