NOW PLAYING THE AGE OF ADALINE Grant Park, Kildonan Place, McGillivray, Polo Park, St. Vital, Towne. PG. 113 minutes. A young woman ( Blake Lively) stays frozen in the age of 29 for nearly a century, keeping her anomalous biology from nosy authorities until a romance with a young tech entrepreneur ( Michiel Huisman) threatens her secret. Lively sets a classy tone: Blonde, elegant and immaculately put together, she looks like a Hitchcock heroine dropped into the 21st century. Meanwhile Harrison Ford, as the hero’s dad, attacks his role with the vigour of a much younger actor. That’s kind of the point of a movie that promises a nice escapist romantic fantasy, while delivering an affirmation that, even if our bodies grow old, passion abides. š š š 1/ 2 CINDERELLA McGillivray, Polo Park, St. Vital. G. 106 minutes. Kenneth Branagh directs a ( more or less) live- action rendition of the Cinderella story. But the lovely and fundamentally uninteresting Lily James as Cinderella is no match for the venom exuded by Cate Blanchett’s evil stepmother. For all its refinement, Cinderella drags when it should skip as lightly as its title character when she’s late getting home from the ball. š š 1/ 2 ( Reviewed by Ann Hornaday ) DANNY COLLINS Grant Park. 14A. 107 minutes. Al Pacino plays a past- his- prime recording artist who has been creatively spinning his wheels for decades before a friend ( Christopher Plummer) gives him a long- undelivered letter from John Lennon that forces a re- evaluation of his life. It’s cute, with an R- rated edge that doesn’t insult the sensibilities of the AARP audience this should appeal to. And the gekko- eyed, leathery grin of Pacino holds it all together. He has never been more engaging at being, well, himself. š š š ( Reviewed by Roger Moore ) THE DEAD LANDS Bandwidth Theatre. 18A. 107 minutes. In pre- colonial New Zealand, a chieftain’s son ( James Rolleston) seeks out a legendary warrior ( Lawrence Makaore) on a mission to avenge his slaughtered tribe. It is touted as the first film to feature Mau rakau, a fierce and fearsome Maori martial art, but for all the film’s savagery, blood- letting, and cannibalism, there is also room for nuance and even notes of poignance. š š š 1/ 2 THE DIVERGENT SERIES: INSURGENT McGillivray, Polo Park, St. Vital. PG. 119 minutes. The second instalment of the Divergent trilogy sees the multi- faceted heroine Tris ( Shailene Woodley) attempting to stem the dictatorial ambitions of Jeanine ( Kate Winslet) while learning she herself holds an important key to Jeanine’s machinations. If the first film built up some good will for its concept, this follow- up squanders it with its ridiculous, non- stop cycle of fight and flight. Coupled with the recent penultimate chapter of The Hunger Games , fans of the young- woman- vs.- dystopian- tyranny genre are in for a serious case of middle- chapter fatigue. š š FURIOUS 7 Grant Park, Kildonan Place, McGillivray, McGillivray VIP, Polo Park, Polo Park Imax, St. Vital, Towne. PG. 138 minutes. Dom ( Vin Diesel) and Brian ( Paul Walker) get the band together to fight the vengeful brother ( Jason Statham) of the vanquished villain from the last movie. Horror director James Wan makes the big jump into action/ event movie savvy to its requirements, particularly having his camera gloat over cars and semi- nude women with pornographic abandon. But the fast- car fantasy this franchise churns out — the notion that no car crash is so bad that the good guy can’t walk away from it — casts a decided chill given the circumstances of Walker’s real- world death. š š 1/ 2 GET HARD Kildonan Place, McGillivray, Polo Park, St. Vital, Towne. 14A. 101 minutes. Will Ferrell plays an investment millionaire faced with hard time at San Quentin when convicted of fraud. So he hires his car wash guy Darnell ( Kevin Hart) to prepare him for life in prison, under the racist assumption that he has done hard time in his past. While the comedy has offended a few critics, it’s a modestly entertaining burlesque, adeptly satirizing racism and, less successfully, homophobia. Remember: all this is within the context of a movie that invites us to laugh at the frequent display of Ferrell’s buttocks. š š š HOME Grant Park, Kildonan Place, McGillivray, Polo Park, St. Vital, Towne. G. 94 minutes. This animated comedy follows the adventures of a lonely alien named Oh ( voiced by Jim Parsons) who finds himself on Earth helping a young girl ( Rihanna) on a quest of her own. The bright- colour palette and bubble motifs are appealing, but without the magic of superior animated films, the candy colours start to have a numbing effect by the end. Home has a good heart, and yet, much like Oh, its valiant efforts to be fun just fizzle. š š 1/ 2 ( Reviewed by Lindsay Bahr ) IT FOLLOWS Polo Park. 14A. 101 minutes. Following a sexual encounter, a 19- year- old young woman ( Maika Monroe) finds herself being stalked by terrifying apparitions that none of her friends can see. Playing on the horror cliché wherein virgins tend to be the ones spared by the films’ featured maniacs, writer- director David Robert Mitchell makes that implicit component explicit: Killer as sexually transmitted disease. It makes for an ambitious, unsettling thriller featuring a supernatural nemesis of many guises, all of which suggest the terrors of adulthood. š š š 1/ 2 THE LONGEST RIDE Grant Park, Polo Park, St. Vital, Towne. PG. 128 minutes. Yet another screen romance based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks, this one tells the story of a rodeo rider ( Scott Eastwood, son of you- know- who) and an artist ( Britt Robertson) who see their troubled relationship in a new light when they make the acquaintance of an elderly veteran ( Alan Alda). It does no good to over- think the high fructose corn syrup served up in this fantasy land. š š ( Reviewed by Roger Moore ) MARINONI: THE FIRE IN THE FRAME Cinematheque. PG. 86 minutes. This documentary examines the life of Montreal- based cyclist and bicycle builder Giuseppe Marinoni as he prepares, at the age of 75, to break a world record for distance cycled in his age group. Filmmaker Tony Girandin’s oneon- one dynamic facilitates a personal give- and- take that shows Marinoni at his most irascible. But as a film artisan, Girandin is a lot less exacting than the bicycle maker, padding the material with unnecessary interviews and occasionally wobbling on his narrative path. š š 1/ 2 MONKEY KINGDOM Polo Park, St. Vital. G. 81 minutes. Narrated by Tina Fey, this Disney nature doc follows the adventures of Maya, a blonde- bobbed monkey trying to raise her son in ancient ruins in the jungles of South Asia. Entertainment value and catering to their very young audience aside, filmmakers Mark Linfield and Alastair Fothergill never stray far from the overarching mission of Disney’s noblest film endeavour — capturing natural worlds and animal behaviour at its rawest. š š š 1/ 2 ( Reviewed by Roger Moore ) PAUL BLART: MALL COP 2 Grant Park, Kildonan Place, McGillivray, Polo Park, St. Vital, Towne. PG. 94 minutes. As the titular security guard, Kevin James goes to Las Vegas for a little rest and relaxation with his collegebound teenage daughter, only to be pulled into action to intercede when a gang of super- criminals attempt to rob all the major casinos. A lot of comedy ideas are thrown at the wall, but little sticks. James doesn’t help, giving his shlub character an unpleasantly aggressive, in- your- face manner — a Blart of darkness, if you will. š 1/ 2 RUN ALL NIGHT Towne. 115 minutes. 14A Liam Neeson plays Jimmy, a mobster whose loyalties shift when his longtime friend and associate ( Ed Harris) puts a hit out on Jimmy’s own son. Neeson and Harris deliver considerable gravitas as friends turned mortal enemies, but their efforts are largely wasted. One’s heart should ache a bit for this story of a father’s shot at redemption. Instead, one’s head aches a bit from all the tech trickery and a particularly percussive soundtrack. š š 1/ 2 THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL Grant Park. PG. 123 minutes . In this sequel to the 2011 hit, the elderly English residents of a hotel in India experience various romantic upheavals simultaneous to the upcoming nuptials of the hotel’s ambitious owner Sonny ( Dev Patel), complicated by the arrival of a mysterious American ( Richard Gere) with designs on Sonny’s beautiful widowed mom ( Lillete Dubey). Very much on par with the original, it’s representative of a certain kind of old- fashioned, handsomely mounted melodrama featuring an array of colourful characters, well performed. As in the first film, when the going gets a little too soapy or overly maudlin, the cast of mostly old pros elevate the material with the sheer force of their collective skill. š š š 1/ 2 TRUE STORY Grant Park, Polo Park. 14A. 100 minutes. A disgraced New York Times reporter ( Jonah Hill) discovers that a man ( James Franco) accused of unthinkable murders has stolen his identity. It might have been more powerful if not for the stunt casting. One wonders if director Rupert Goold did not have enough faith in the compelling material to have cast lesser known actors in those key roles. This is a movie about two men facing off on a playing field of ego and hubris. The last thing it needed was a couple of star turns. š š 1/ 2 UNFRIENDED Kildonan Place, McGillivray, Polo Park, St. Vital, Towne. 18A. 83 minutes. This horror film goes “ found footage” one better by concentrating entirely on a girl’s computer screen while she and her friends deal with the malevolent spirit of a teenage girl who committed suicide one year earlier, now bent on revenge. Not since The Blair Witch Project in 1999 has a horror film taken such a creative approach to conjure scares. š š š 1/ 2 ( Reviewed by Ric Bentley ) WHILE WE’RE YOUNG Polo Park. 14A. 97 minutes. Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts play a middle- aged couple who take a stab at youth when they befriend a dynamic younger couple ( Adam Driver and Amanda Seyfried) in this comedy of manners from director Noah Baumbach ( Frances Ha ). As amusing as the film is, Baumbach does try the audience’s collective patience with Stiller’s obnoxious, narcissistic protagonist. This is a smart observational comedy on the millennial iteration of the generation gap. It might have been more entertaining if you didn’t feel the urge to strangle the hero. š š š WOMAN IN GOLD Grant Park, McGillivray VIP. PG. 109 minutes. Helen Mirren stars as a one- time Jewish refugee who challenges Austrian ownership of the titular Nazi- heisted Gustav Klimt painting, and hires a lawyer ( Ryan Reynolds) to retrieve it from the Austrian government. It’s based on a true story, but the execution is marred by the lack of chemistry between Mirren and Reynolds, nice actors playing nice characters, either one of whom might have sacrificed some likability for the sake of some much- needed dramatic abrasion. That all makes it harder to accept the film’s very American notion of justice served through dollar- value litigation. š š The Age of Adaline A_ 13_ Apr- 26- 15_ FP_ 01. indd A13 4/ 25/ 15 7: 12: 39 PM
