T WO teams; two leagues; two continents, and
two objectives that, just a few weeks ago,
seemed as distant as the space between
them.
Geographically, Leicester
City and the Montreal Impact
are separated by more
than 5,000 kilometres. And,
given that Leicester play in
the lucrative English Premier
League, while Montreal
operates in Major League
Soccer, the financial and
competitive gulf is similarly
vast.
But that doesn’t mean they
can’t both be about to achieve
something extraordinary, that the next few days
and weeks can’t be among the most memorable in
the history of either club.
Leicester City set for safety
Leicester — for much of the season seemingly
destined for relegation — has suddenly sprung
to life and, with a win today at last- place Burnley
( who are just two points in arrears), could
climb out of the drop- zone for the first time since
October.
“ It’s a difficult situation, but I think we have
our chances to win matches,” remarked optimistic
Foxes midfielder Esteban Cambiasso earlier
this month. “ I’m sure, because I watch my teammates
every day, we can save Leicester and stay
in the Premier League.”
He could well be proved right, and less than
48 hours after making the pronouncement, he
backed up his words with an impactful performance
at home to West Ham.
The former Inter Milan star and Argentina
international opened the scoring after just 12
minutes at King Power Stadium as City triumphed
2- 1 — their first victory since January.
Then, a week later, Cambiasso set up the
stoppage- time winner in his side’s narrow, 3- 2
win away to West Bromwich Albion. And last
week against Swansea he threw himself into an
eye- popping seven tackles as the hosts recorded
just their fifth clean sheet of the season, prevailing
2- 0 on Filbert Way.
The 34- year- old, who helped the Nerazzurri to
a Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions League
treble in 2010, has been leading by example in
April, although the likes of defenders Robert
Huth and Wes Morgan, midfielder Andy King and
attackers Jamie Vardy and Leonardo Ulloa have
been key to Leicester’s revival as well.
“ We’ve given ourselves a better chance than
we had three weeks ago,” opined manager Nigel
Pearson at his Thursday press conference. “ If we
can keep it in our own hands going into the final
week of the season, I think we would have made
a really good fist of what has been a difficult
season.”
Impact living up to their name
The Montreal Impact has yet to win an MLS
match in 2015. Through four rounds they’ve
scored just twice and sit alone at the bottom of
the table — one point behind lowly Toronto FC.
But they’ve been a force at continental level.
After winning a second successive Canadian
Championship last June, the Quebec side eased a
CONCACAF Champions League group that also
included New York Red Bulls and FAS out of Honduras.
From there they ousted four- time North
American champions Pachuca on away goals,
which they also needed to see off Costa Rica’s
Alajuelense in the semifinals.
As if being just the fifth MLS team — and
first Canadian entry — to progress to the final
wasn’t enough, Montreal then opened the scoring
in front of nearly 60,000 fans at Club America’s
Estadio Azteca before Mexico international Oribe
Peralta hit back with a late equalizer.
Thanks to the draw the Impact will go into
Wednesday’s second leg leading on away goals
and just 90 minutes from making history and jolting
their season into life in a big, big way.
“ It was a great result for us. They’re a very
good team; they’re a top team and it’s not an easy
place to come and get a result,” said midfielder
Nigel Reo- Coker after the full- time whistle in the
Mexican capital. “ At times we played some great
football. We showed what we’re capable of as a
team.”
Now the trick is to mimic their continental
form domestically, although the 2012 expansion
outfit won’t play their next MLS match until Portland
Timbers come calling on May 9.
Montreal lost 3- 0 in Houston the last time out —
a defeat that, according to defender Donny Toia,
was an exhibition of “ stupid, silly mistakes.”
While a CONCACAF title, and resulting trip
to the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, would no
doubt rank as Canadian club football’s greatest
achievement it would also be that much less
meaningful if the Impact failed to consolidate
their Champions League display with at least
modest success in Major League Soccer.
Assuming they prevail at Olympic Stadium,
that will be their challenge between next week
and December.
