John Quenneville’s pass from the end boards found his brother Peter alone in the slot, and the Brandon captain scored with a quick shot 6: 15 into extra time to lift the Wheat Kings to their second straight 3- 2 overtime victory over the Regina Pats Friday night at Westman Place. “ I think it’s just something you dream of,” said Peter Quenneville, whose Wheat Kings won the best- ofseven Eastern Conference semifinal 4- 1. “ Even Johnny’s goal that he scored in Edmonton ( a double- overtime tally that clinched Brandon’s first- round series) it was a special moment, to have family there. And then there was family here again tonight, and to be able to end it in that fashion, it’s just ( stuff) that you think of as a little kid.” Peter Quenneville also set up a pair of Nolan Patrick goals as the Wheat Kings advanced to the third round of the playoffs for the first time since 2010, setting up a conference final with the Calgary Hitmen, who got a goal from Elkhorn’s Travis Sanheim in double overtime to beat Medicine Hat 4- 3 on Friday, clinching their series with the Tigers in five games. Pats goalie Daniel Wapple starred again, making 48 saves as he faced 40- plus shots for the fourth game in a row, but it was Brandon’s Jordan Papirny, who came out with the victory with a 25- stop performance. It was the second straight five- game series victory for the Wheat Kings, but head coach and general manager Kelly McCrimmon felt that, like Brandon’s first- round win over the Oil Kings, the series was much tougher than the final tally of wins and losses indicated. “ Playoffs are tough and winning is hard,” said McCrimmon. “ That’s how it is at this time of the year. Both our series have been I think very challenging and I think that’s part of why playoffs make your team better and make your players better.” For the second time in the series, the Wheat Kings opened the scoring with a short- handed goal. Peter Quenneville sent Patrick in alone on Wapple and the rookie picked the high glove hand corner. The Wheat Kings continued to carry the play through the early stages of the second period, but they couldn’t extend their lead, despite being on the power play twice in the first five minutes of the frame. That proved to be key as the Pats potted a pair of goals to go into the third period leading 2- 1 for the second game in a row.
