We don’t have enough space to go through all of them here; however, the following are a few key ones. Interest rates remain extremely low. There hasn’t even been a hint of the most nominal increase until late 2016, and again, a small increase at that. If you want to take advantage of the variable rate, you can do so. A fixed fiveyear mortgage is available at astoundingly low rates. Manitoba home values continue to increase every year. A new home is an excellent investment. Furthermore, it is an investment that has doubled in value over the past 15 years. How many of your other investments have that track record? You are living in that investment and raising your family and entertaining friends in that investment. Hard to do that with a bond or stock. Quite immodestly, I will state Manitoba new homes are the best built in Canada. Our energy efficiency is unmatched. It has to be. We can experience a temperature swing from - 40 C to 30 C in a few months. The Manitoba new- home industry stays ahead of the pack in the design and construction of new homes. We were the first in Canada to implement heat recovery ventilators. We’re the first to implement drain water heat recovery systems. We made low- flush toilets the industry standard long before legislation was introduced. We’ve talked about affordability and quality; the last key point to cover is choice. With a new home, you can build in the neighbourhood you choose and the lot you choose. More importantly, you choose the style of home. You don’t have to wish you had an extra bedroom; you can design and build one into your home. You don’t have to wish your kitchen was laid out differently; you can design and build it to your tastes. You don’t have to knock out a wall or two to open things up; you can design and build it just the way you want. Why spend time and money wishing things were different when you can do it right the first time? The Spring Parade generated a lot of interest in the new- home market. The weather was perfect and so visitors could not only see all aspects of the show home, but they could also drive to prospective neighbourhoods and actually envision that home in this specific lot with them living in that home. There are many reasons why now is a good time to build. Revisit the various show homes from the Parade and choose your new home. Mike Moore is president of the Manitoba Home Builders’ Association By Mike Moore Building a new home a good investment Q UESTION: Thank you for your advice regarding the removal of old wine from my vintage decanter. The ammonia soak worked perfectly. Now, I would like to remove some old stains from under the rim of a toilet bowl. What is the best way to do this nasty task? Thanks. Val, Winnipeg ANSWER: To remove rust stains in a toilet, purchase a pumice stone and lubricate it with either cheap shampoo or dish soap. Wet the stone and gently wipe the toilet rim to remove rust marks. Or purchase a product called Iron Out. Add a half- cup of Iron Out to the bowl and a half- cup to the tank. Scrub with a toilet brush or leave overnight, scrub and flush. QUESTION: I was putting a patch on my grandson’s winter gloves ( wanted to extend the life of them till spring). I was using seam glue to waterproof the stitching. Well, I dropped some on a pair of new leggings. I have tried WD- 40, vinegar and Dawn dish soap, but the stain is still there. These are very good leggings, so I would appreciate any suggestions you can give me. I read your column every Saturday in the Free Press . Marie ( Niverville) ANSWER: Many types of glues are permanent, and removal may not be possible. However, before giving up, take an old rag and cover the stain. Put a fabric iron over the area to loosen the glue. Once softened, pull off the glue. Or soak the area with amyl acetate ( test on an inconspicuous are first). Remove the glue and scrub with dish soap and water before laundering. QUESTION: I never miss your column. Our coffee maker has the odd meltdown, leaving coffee all over the counter. We now have a permanent stain on our laminate countertop. How do we get rid of it? Cathy ( St. Rose, Man.) ANSWER: Make a paste of baking soda and water. Apply the mixture and leave for 10 mins. Scrub with abrasive ( non- scratching) pad. If the stain remains, scrub the area with a half tsp. dish soap and water. Next pour 1 tbsp. three per cent hydrogen peroxide and 1 tbsp. household ammonia onto the area and scrub with a green scrubby pad. Rinse with water. QUESTION: I have rust stains on my concrete balcony floor. Please help! Thanks. M, Winnipeg ANSWER: Into a two- gallon bucket, combine one gallon of water and two cups of oxalic acid. Stir and pour onto the stain. Leave for three hours and scrub. Repeat until the stain is gone ( test on an inconspicuous area first). QUESTION: My mom kept my brother’s golden retriever for six weeks and still has a lot of her hair around. She has tried a Norwex brush, Knut brushes and duct tape. Any ideas? Thanks, Megan ( Rivers) ANSWER: A lint roller and vacuum are a good combination to help you remove pet fur, and if this was your dog, I would add, some dogs ( especially large dogs) love to be vacuumed. However, in order to avoid clogging up your vacuum cleaner, consider this cool trick: Purchase a wire pet hair brush. Pull the brush along carpets, stairs and furniture. This process doesn’t take long and is an easy way to remove fur from textiles. You can also remove pet hair from furniture by running a dampened rubber glove along the surface. Or spray furniture with a combination of fabric softener and water, and wipe the area. Note: Every user assumes all risks of injury or damage resulting from the implementation of any suggestions in this column. Test all products on an inconspicuous area first.
