Perma- tanned under that vast black mane and Mephistophelian goatee, blinged in the Jersey Italian style, effortlessly larger than life and bowlyou- over charming, this is the post “ Hoo- hah” Pacino that he’s presented to the press and the public since Scent of a Woman . And he’s never been more engaging at being, well, himself. Credit writer- director Dan Fogelman for putting the real Pacino into this “ kind of based on a true story... a little bit.” Danny Collins is about a rich and super- famous singer- songwriter sellout in the Neil Diamond mould, a guy cruising for decades on hits the singalong audience basically performs for him. Then, like the real- life singer we see in the closing credits, he’s gifted with a letter John Lennon once wrote to him back at the beginning of his career, a little advice about “ riches” and “ fame” that might have served him well 40 years ago. Danny quits his tour, ditches the “ coked- up teenager who can’t keep her nipples covered” ( his fiancée, played by Katarina Cas) and heads to Jersey to meet the son he never knew. That son, played by Bobby Cannavale with an exhausted, weary rage that long ago lost its heat, wants nothing to do with him. Nor does his slightly more sympathetic wife ( Jennifer Garner, glorious). Their adorable ADHD daughter ( Giselle Eisenberg) is another story. Danny turns on the twinkle for the staff of the Hilton where he’s staying, especially the “ age- appropriate” manager ( Annette Bening in a pasted- on grin that isn’t falling for anything). He sparkles for his “ family.” And he drinks, even as he tries to stop sniffing the coke he keeps in the garish crucifix he wears beneath his open shirt wrapped in an omnipresent scarf. Danny Collins is entirely too on- thenose to be much of a challenge, but it is about something, about taking stock, trying something hard and then wondering if the easy thing that’s gotten you by all these years is what you should go back to. Bening and Pacino make their banter work. Fogelman laces the soundtrack with Lennon songs, gets Christopher Plummer to play the saucy old manager/ father confessor to Danny and Josh Peck to play a star- struck doorman. And in this F- bomb laced showbiz dramedy, he makes sure the only F- bombs that matter are from that crusty agent and the saintly “ best daughter- in- law ever.” It’s cute, with an R- rated edge that doesn’t insult the sensibilities of the AARP audience this should appeal to. And the gekko- eyed, leathery grin of Pacino holds it all together, whether it’s croaking Danny’s biggest hit on stage, dancing the “ moves” that made the groupies swoon back in the last century or hinting at the lonely vulnerability of a guy who gets — almost too late — the affirmation from his idol that could have changed his life. — The Associated Press Al Pacino hits all the right notes as aging pop star By Roger Moore Other voices A completely charming comedy- drama. Grant Park, Polo Park . 14A . 107 minutes š š š out of five RECENTLY, producer- director Ridley Scott announced his intention to create a movie franchise around George MacDonald Fraser’s legendary Victorian war hero/ womanizer/ coward Harry Flashman. As I’m a fan, that got me to thinking who would be cast in the role. As it happens, the movie The Riot Club functions as a virtual casting call, as it offers a few likely candidates doing excellent work portraying handsome, entitled, amoral cads. The film, by director Lone Scherfig ( An Education ), is an adaptation of Laura Wade’s play Posh set at Oxford University, specifically amid the ultra- exclusive numbers of the titular boy’s club, a centuries- old institution catering to the depraved appetites of its upper- crust scions. Because the membership must always number 10, two new members are recruited. Miles ( Max Irons) is the rich but fundamentally decent chap who innocently accepts the notion that the gang is just in it for fun. His opposite, Alistair ( Sam Clafin, whom I hereby nominate for Flashman), is the dark, angry, possibly psychopathic freshman who holds the poor and the bourgeoisie in equal degrees of boiling hate. “ In a few years, these boys will be behind some very big desks... important desks,” the club president explains to Miles. “ College is the last time we get to disport ourselves without anyone watching. Let’s not waste it by being squeamish.” But as it turns out, there is plenty to get squeamish about, especially when the lads take off for a dinner at a distant pub ( they’ve been banned by all the eateries in the vicinity of Oxford) and things get predictably out of control. The Riot Club is based on Oxford’s notorious Bullingdon Club, whose membership includes British Prime Minister David Cameron and London Mayor Boris Johnson, two men who do indeed sit behind big, important desks. As such, the film makes for a pertinent indictment of white- male privilege still clinging here in the 21st century. It’s somewhat less satisfying as a movie thanks to a heavy, sombre tone that might have been well served by a little satiric leavening.
