V OLUNTEERING was
always important for
Alan and Karen Court,
so when the couple
had children, it was natural
they would volunteer as well.
“ My husband was really good at putting
up his hand for everything,” Karen
said of Alan, who passed away from
cancer in late 2013.
Karen and her
daughters, Jamie
and Jessica, volunteer
regularly
at the Winnipeg
Folk Festival,
the Winnipeg
International
Children’s Festival,
the Canadian
Cancer Society
as well as their
local community
club, the Earl
Grey Community Centre. Alan was
committed to volunteering at those
places, too.
“ Volunteering is a big part of our life
not only for the community involvement,
but for us it’s definitely the family
aspect,” Jessica said. “ It’s always our
favourite time of year to pack up for the
weekend and go down to Birds Hill for
the folk fest, or go to The Forks for the
Children’s Festival and play in the sun
and the mud and volunteer and be with
our family.”
The Court family’s efforts are being
recognized next Tuesday, April 14 at
Volunteer Manitoba’s 32nd Annual Volunteer
Awards Dinner. The Courts will
receive the Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries
Family Impact Award.
Volunteer Manitoba, an organization
that exists to provide information,
training and resources on all aspects of
the voluntary sector, will also present
awards to 30 other winners.
Noreen Mian, executive director of
Volunteer Manitoba, says the purpose
of the awards is to recognize work that
often goes unnoticed.
“ We sort of have to broadcast that
there are people out there who are giving
their time and their skills in order to
make their communities a better place,”
Mian said.
She adds there are thousands of volunteers
across the province.
“ We have these events like floods
where people have to come together in
order to help their neighbours and help
their community,” Mian said. “ I think
it’s really part of our cultural fabric for
that reason. We’re also a very festivaloriented
city. People like the Court
family come together to put on these
big festivals... It’s just part of what we
do.”
The awards dinner coincides with
National Volunteer Week ( NVW), which
takes place April 12- 18. NVW is an
initiative Volunteer Canada promotes
annually to recognize and celebrate
the work done by volunteers across the
country.
Mian points out volunteerism is a core
value for Canadians.
“ We tell people who are new to our
country that this is something we do,
and it’s something we do without question,”
Mian said. “ Nobody questions
the value of it for the volunteer themselves...
and also for the wider community.”
Anyone interested in attending the
awards dinner can purchase a ticket by
visiting volunteermanitoba. ca/ awards.
Karen says her family is honoured to
receive the Impact Award, and it is a
nice tribute to her late husband.
She adds volunteering has created a
strong bond between herself and her
daughters. She encourages people to
volunteer with their families so they
can forge similar bonds.
Jessica agrees, adding she has many
fond memories of volunteering with her
family as she was growing up.
“ It wasn’t ever work, it was just,
‘ We’re going to do this and we’re going
to have fun,’ ” Jessica said. “ Then the
weekend would be over and we’d want to
go back ( and do it again).”
