The Mound i rally increased in height until the entire mass of Earth was slowly lifted and then precipitated upon a portion of the body which had until then remained uncovered and in a second s time the Snake was As effectually buried As if it had sunk a foot below the surface. The Little beetles emerging from the Heap walked backward and Forward Over the Mound and then disappeared entirely from sight., i examined the spot the following morning but could detect even by removing a the Earth the place where the Snake had been buried the evening Newa. Be publican Unity. If there were no other Reacon for the maintenance of the Republican organization in this country it would be found to be a National necessity on acct it of the incurable demoralization of the democratic party. That part is no More fit to control the affairs of this nation than a Yoke of stump tailed oxen would be to carry on the Trade Between the Interior and the Pacific slope. It is a party that neither learns nor forgets anything. It does know that the country is Only greater than formerly but Wiser that a great majority of the people have no More respect for Demark Ratic ideas prejudices narrowness old fog ism than for cast off old clothes. In a word the democratic party in respect to ideas is behind the times so far that to put it in Power would drag the country Back to a former generation. And this Lolly the people will allow. But if this were enough the practices of the democracy demonstrate its demoralization almost to the degree of incurable corruption. The people of Illinois Are familiar with the fact that a Large majority of democratic members of the legislature of this state have taken to bribery As Young ducks to water making necessary the most stringent provisions in the proposed new Constitution against the evil. In the legislative bodies of other states the same fact has appeared and in some of them the conduct of the democrats has been a disgrace and shame to the american name. In new York where democracy has everything its own Way Public affairs Are so conducted As to be a reproach to any people. If there is More Honor among thieves than among the democrats who control new York the thieves Are worse off than has generally been supposed. If the whole country were so expensively corruptly outrageously governed As is the City of new York the people would Rise in Masse and wipe out the villainy and shame or would themselves become a prey to worse ills than those which afflict the worst governed Peoples of Europe or Asia. A party like this it is but a logical deduction to say is unfit to have the control of the affairs of a free honest and enlightened people. If the Republican party had no other Merit for which it should receive a favourable judgment of our body politic than this of having beaten the democratic party it would be enough. For the continuance of the democratic party in Power would have been the ruin of the Republic of our free institutions and of our political morals. The Republican party on the other hand has Only placed itself in full Accord with the people in respect to progressive ideas but has elevated politics extended the Sway of Freedom and conferred great and lasting benefits upon the country. If it has allowed the passage of some Laws which Are now seen to be unjust the reason is to be found rather in changed circumstances than in premeditated injustice. And that reforms demanded by Justice and the interests of the whole people will be inaugurated and carried out by the party upon the basis of National Honor we have every reason to believe. Indeed it has been the Mission of the Republican party in the past to erase injustice and wrong from the Law of the land. It will be but going on with its Mission to erase All the injustice that yet Mars our statute Book and injures the country. If we do but consider justly the interests of the Republic the doctrines and practices of the democratic party the ideas and general honesty of the a a try which saved the nation in its perilous period we shall see there is unanswerable argument for Republican Unity and Triumph now. The fruits of intelligent Industry. A correspondent of the Maine Farmer thus Speaks of the Way he constructed a farm out of the poorest kind of materials and How he did it quot thirty years ago i came in Possession of about sixty five acres of Rocky cold Clayey land. About sixteen acres of this land was in mowing about thirty in pasture and the remainder waa in Wood. With Small Means but Strong hands and a willing heart i went to work to see it i could get a subsistence from so unpromising a Patch of Earth. The result has been that i have lived and if i have grown Rich i have at least proved to my own satisfaction that farming is an honest in Ying business when properly and Intel gently conducted. In the first place i fenced off about five acres of my pasture land which i broke up and sowed with Grain and grass seed i took off but one crop Viz that of Grain the next year Bre amp King up another piece of my pasture i allowed my cattle to run upon the piece first sowed Down. In this Way in about years i had broken up and sowed Down the whole of my pasture land applying no dressing except that dropped by the cattle. Going Over my pasture land in this manner from two to three times removing Stone draining Etc., with no outlay for dressing i brought to some thirty acres of almost worthless pasture from a Large part of which i have Cut As much As three tons of Hay to the acre. While thus treating my pasture i have had the dressing made at my barn to apply to what was formerly my mowing land. I have also in order to accomplish what Webster so forcibly commended to Hayne a prudent husbandry of my resources put up several temporary Sheds for my sheep which i have moved from time to time to different portions of my Fields or pasture thus concentrating the valuable deposits of the animal and enabling me to apply them where most needed. By pursuing the course thus briefly described i have gradually restored to great Fertility an almost worthless and worn out pasture at an astonishingly Small outlay of expense. The principle on which i have conducted my farming operations and upon which i claim that farming can alone be made to pay is this the take no More from the land than you Beautiful women. All women know that it is Hearty rather than Genoa which All generations of men have worshipped in the sex. Can it he wondered at then that so much of woman s time and attention should tie devoted to the Means of developing and preserving that Hearty t women know too that when men speak of the int elect of women. They speak critically tamely coolly but when they come to speak of the charms of a Beautiful woman their language and their eyes kindle with an enthusiasm which shews them to he profoundly if indeed ridiculously in Zamost. It is part of the natural sagacity of women to perceive All this and therefore employ every allowable Art to become the Goddeke of that adoration. Preach to tho contrary As we May against the arts employed by women for enhancing their Beauty there still stands the eternal fact that the world does prefer the st piety of an ugly woman of Genius to that of a Beauty of less intellectual acquirement. Ever e the Day when the ass broke into that grecian Vineyard and taught by his drops aug that some Good followed summer pruning thousands of leaves have been stripped off and millions of vines injured by a too free use of the pruning knife. We have Laboured As sincerely As any to show How a Ucli is lost in this Way and have pointed out that pruning As generally Practised tends to weaken vitality and pave the Way for future diseases. But we observe that some of our pupils Are going to another extreme. Prune at All getting to be a popular but a too common cry a Little pruning unlike a Little learning is at All a dangerous thing. Darwin has shown that there is amongst individual plaints a struggle tor lii e always going on. The stronger crowds out the weaker one but so Long As it lives the weaker has some effect on the stronger one. The same Law is Tnie of branches As of distinct plants each struggles for Light. The vigorous shoot shades the weaker but that in turn sometimes interferes with the Strong one and prevents it from utilizing the Light to the Best advantage. Thus it will be seen that to have the Best results we must regulate this struggle in nature. A dozen branches Well developed and having the ability to display All their Leafy charms to the admiring sunlight will be Worth much More to the Plant than double the number closely interfering with one another. A Good Gardener must have foresight. He should be Able to see in imagination a tree a year ahead of its real a growth and prune in Advance of the necessity of the tree. This will prevent much of the temporary injury which undoubtedly flows from severe pruning All at once and which if annually continued is a great s monthly. Dig around the Trees. This advice needs to be repeated daily. Every Farmer knows that a Hill of Corn or potatoes will amount to much unless cultivated and yet there Are Many will neglect to give the same care to a tree which is Worth a Hundred Hills of either of the former. In Rich soils Trees May grow rapidly without cultivation and no amount of weeds or grass will re tar them but there Are other things besides growth to look after. If the weeds and grass Are allowed to grow up around the stems of the Apple peach or quince Trees the bark will let come soft near their base by i eing shaded an i thereby be in a us table condition for reception of the eggs which will eventually become peach or Apple borers. Take any dozen Young Apple Trees in sections where the Apple tree Borer is abundant and allow a portion to be choked with weeds and the remainder Well cultivated and then watch the result from our own experience we believe that the chances Are nine to one in favor of those cultivated being exempt from this pest. The same is True in regard to Many other Trees which Are liable to the attacks of various species of insects. Tour evergreens should never. Have their lower branches shaded with weeds and grass and the soil As seut As the lower branches extend should l e stirred at least once in two or Oliree weeks during the entire stunner or Els i apply some kind o mulching that will effectually keep Down the weeds. Quot when the Trees become Large and Strong these precautions will be necessary. Every Blade of grass or Small Weed that is owed to grow about the Stem of your Young Trees will Iron the soil of moisture and this amp it alone ought to be sufficient to make every one practice thorough and careful ii attire quot quot and Soma. Such is the three fold operation of Hostetter s stomach bitters and hence the great Superior of that Standard vegetable restorative Over ail medicines that Are merely tonics and nothing else. The effect of the Ordinary astringent tinctures and extracts upon the bowels is disastrous and upon the depraved blog cd or bile they produce no beneficial effects whatever. In dyspepsia and liver complaint All the fluids and Humours of the body Are More or less infected and the bowels Are often badly constipated. An unmodified astringent quinine for instance does infinitely More Barm than Good in such cases. In Hostetter s bitters on the other band the stimulating and tonic elements Are qualified with ape Rients and Antiseptic ingredients. The finest laxatives and blood dept rents in the vegetable kingdom Are intermixed with those of a purely invigorating nature and under the opera ton of this admirable combination the three important processes of invigoration regulation and purification go on together.
