But in this matter of the census figures in Washington and Beaufort county the figures Are so obviously wrong that we feel this approach is justified and necessary. The preliminary census figures list the population of the City of Washington at 8,633 in i960 census the official figures for Washington Are listed at 9,939. In a special census taken in 1966 the official figures for Washington Are 10,175 thus from the above figures Washington has lost 1,542 people since 1966. That just is not so two Days ago on wednesday june 17, the total paid circulation of the Washington daily news was 7,834. Within the City limits of Washington the daily news was delivered to 2,474 family units. It is indisputably known that there Are 4.2 persons per family unit in this area. Thus if we Divide the preliminary census figure of 8,633 by 4.2, we figure that according to the census there Are Only 2,056 family units in Washington. Thus the daily news in paid circulation on last wednesday was delivered to 418 More family units in the City than the census Bureau says we have. That is an impossible situation the Dally news Only claims to be going into 90 l percent of the Homes in the City. And that is among the highest percentages in North Carolina. On the basis of our circulation we should have around 2,750 family units living in the City. If we multiply 2,750 by 4.2, we say that within the City limits of Washington we have around 11,550 peo p l e. In i960 the total paid circulation of the daily news was less than 5,000 today it is approaching 8,000 a newspaper just does not increase circulation in that amount in the face of a declining population. It just cannot be done in 1960 the Beaufort county official population was 36,014. The preliminary figure gives us now 34,641, a loss of 1,373. Yet in this 10 year period we have had Texas Gulf Sulphur company come Here. We have had Hamilton Beach Flanders filters with to. And we have had several Industrial firms enlarge their operations.
