Bill Page Washington businessman was last night elected chairman of the six county mid East economic development commission. He succeeds Carl Venters of farm Ville who has headed the commission since it was organized in april 1967. In one of his first acts As chairman. Page presented Venters with a plaque in recognition of his services to the commission. These actions came at the third annual meeting of the mid East organization at the Beaufort county Law enforcement association hut West of the City. Otter officers elected were Jack Runion of Williamston vice chairman and e. V. Wilkins of Roper Secretary. Earlier congressman Walter b. Jones saluted the mid East economic development commission for sparking a cooperative Effort which has brought about programs which should spell Progress in several areas. Congressman Jones noted that Grants have been obtained for upgrading Law enforcement and applications have been made to improve housing. He also took note of the movement to get a regional Airport to serve Beaufort Pitt and Martin counties and pledged his support in efforts to get a facility. The congressman said county boundaries will play a less important part in the future than in the past. An application is currently pending with the coastal Plains regional commission for a marketing specialist. A Marine resources program is under development. A a lot has happened during the year. Three growth centers were approved., and of size is an achievement in. Itself. No other District in America which is comparable to the mid East can boast a feat. And As is required a positive action program Pap has been prepared and is now approved for the Greenville Center. The Williamston Pap is now being prepared and will be followed by one for Washington. But dust has not settled on these document a during the year the mid East regional housing authority was formed. A study of housing conditions in the area revealed that. O ver 14, to were substandard. But dust has not settled on this study for applications have been submitted to the department of housing and Urban development for 3,000 units of housing 1,000 leased and 2,000 conventional. If Only half of this amount is approved within the next five years it will represent Over 122 million in additional housing for the area a a year ago the Law enforcement planning program had just been organized by the mid East. Since that time More than $320,000 has become available to improve Law enforcement in our area through training equipment and manpower. A Mobile crime lab in Beaufort and a degree level program at East Carolina University Are provided through these funds a applications for nearly $5 million in water and sewer Grants have been submitted and Are at varied stages of review.
