The subtitle of his lecture was Quot How Arab and Muslim culture has changed America for the the former Fulbright scholar a who has spent time teaching in Pakistan and doing research in Oxford England a presented his research on the connections Between american and Arab history touching on topics such As the Muslim influences in the architecture of the Alamo and How the poet Ralph Waldo Emerson was inspired by the scriptures of islam and persian poetry. Quot he was America s first great intellect Quot Curiel said Quot he identified with islam and Muslim culture and he cited the Koran hundreds of during his lecture Curiel said that up to 20 percent of slaves brought to America from Africa were Muslim and Many slaves went by arabic names and some even wrote their autobiographies in arabic. According to Curiel this islamic connection to Early Afri can american society can still be seen in the sounds of blues musicians and even in the music of Billie Holiday. In addition Curiel explained that when the american Southwest was settled by Spanish explorers whose own history included centuries of Rule by Muslim invaders in Spain they brought arabian plants like Palm Trees and fruits like pomegranates. Ii. 2010. He was raised in Arizona and graduated from Buckeye High school in Arizona. He was in the from 1964 to 1967 in Vietnam. In 1980 he married Virginia Dee Myers. He retired from Walla Walla City after 2.5 years at the equipment Pool. He has four children three daughters Chrystal Pehl Peggy Minnis and Angie Reeves one son Vern Pehl and 11 grandchildren. Elsie Jones sept. 9, 1914 feb. 2, 2010 Elsie Lillian Perry Jones passed away at Home feb. 2, 2010. She was 95. Elsie was born to Clara Vail Perry and Ellis Perry on sept. 9, 1914, in Sumas Wash. She grew up in the Roseburg area graduating from High school at rogue River Academy. She attended Walla Walla College for one year taking pre nursing. She left school and went to work at the hot Lake sanitarium As a general duty nurse and hydrotherapy tech. She was offered a Job in los Angeles in a children s . Hospital. She then came to the Dalles . Hospital where she married Gerald a. Jones on . 22, 1939, at White Salmon Wash. They had three sons and one daughter. They eventually settled in Hermiston Ore. At the age of 60, Elsie went Back to school and received her in from Columbia Basin Community College. She stayed in Hermiston and worked at the Umatilla Hospital Good Samaritan nursing Home and the Eastern Oregon state Hospital. She retired from Josh and finished her career working in the office. Of or. Kent Brueske in Athena and As a Home health nurse. She lived in College place from 1994 until 2008 and was a member of the Walla Walla University seventh Day adventist Church. She worked As an in until age 85. She began jogging at age 62 and ran 2 Miles a Day until age 80. She was a very dedicated lifelong member of the seventh Day adventist Church. Her children and grandchildren were the Joy of her life and she spent All her time and love on them. She is survived by her brother Everett Perry la Quinta Calif. Daughter and son in Law Teri and Ron Robins Hermiston sons Perry Jones Walla Walla Gary Jones Hermiston and Barton Jones Walla Walla. She has 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren whom she adored. She was preceded in death by her parents Sisters Carol Anderson and Esther Perry and Brothers James Perry Vail Perry and Vernon Perry. Passed away peacefully Jan. 31, 2010, at Walla Walla general Hospital. He was 91. The funeral service will be saturday. Feb. 6. 2010, at 10 . At the first Christian Church in Milton free water. Homer was born March 22. 1918. In his parents Quot Home in the Prunedale Community in Milton free water. He was the first child of Arthur and Ellen c Ordella Wicks Koon. Homer attended Eastside Grade school. His grandparents Benjamin and Minnie Koon donated the land for the school. Homer being a Good athlete played football for Mac i winning the state football title in both 1935 and 1936. He was also on the boxing team. After graduating from Mac i in 1936 he attended Eastern Oregon College. Homer started his career in 19 6 working for j. Burke Canning co., which later became Rogers Canning. He was the superintendent in the Athena Plant and then in Milton free water from 1949 until his retirement in 1983. The Plant was then known As Walla Walla Rogers Canning co. Many High school and College kids worked their Way through College working for Homer at Rogers. Many still keep in touch today. Homer married Rosalie Feigner on june 3, 1939, in Spokane. They renewed their wedding vows on their 50th anniversary in 1989 and celebrated their 69th anniversary in 2008. Homer suffered a stroke in 1998 and his devoted Loving wife Rosalie was his dedicated caregiver until june 2008 when she became ill. She passed away that july of non Hodgkin s Lymphoma. Working at Rogers Homer served the food processing Industry for 47 years. During the War Homer signed up to serve our country. Due to the Reliance on the food processing Industry and what it provided to the country and the troops his tour was deferred. He enlisted again when they called for More troops. In 1945 he was in Portland awaiting induction into the and was sent Home As the Day he was there the War ended. Homer considered his greatest achievements to be his marriage and his children. Enjoying sports he was a soccer coach for Eastside school. He was a member of the Milton Volunteer fire department for Many years. Homer was a craftsman and built several Homes one on the Highway and then one in town in 1954, where they raised their children and made their permanent Home. Homer truly enjoyed golfing. Homer and Rosalie enjoyed travelling together and travelled extensively and especially loved travelling in their trailer. Together they travelled All 50 . States Alaska and Hawaii several times and worldwide to nearly every continent. He was a Mason a member of Good Sams life member of the elks Milton Golf course Doakie Lodge and served As the first Pat president for Central Grade school. Homer had a deep Faith in god. He was a member of the first Christian Church in Milton free water and served in leadership As a sunday school teacher was an elder for 55 years honorary elder chairman of the Board and trustee. Homer is survived by daughters and sons in Law Carolyn and Clark Hansen Walla Walla and Sandra and Wes Headrick Waitsburg grandchildren Cathi Beck and Scott Hansen and his wife Margaret Vandenberg step grandchildren Auroe Wood and Wes Headrick iii. Great grand children Jennifer Willeford Joshua Beck and Jordan Beck step great grandchildren Stephanie Beck Justin Beck Aiden Wood and Kyle Headrick one great great grandson Landry Willeford and nine step great great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister and brother in Law Myrle Faye and Charles Robertson and Many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Rosalie daughter Deanna Joyce and son Gary Lee his sister Bernice Gettmann and his brother Mervin notice Ruby Wiltz april 21, 1910-feb. 2,2010 Walla Walla a Ruby Wiltz 99, died feb. 2, 2010, at Odd Fellows Home.
