supermarket chain anawMced Wednesday it will stop following the traditional industry practice of marking up prices oa food already stocked oa shelves The company wUh 1950 stores coast to coast selling more than billion worth of food annually said also that cans or packages bearing more thanone CAB Forecasts Losses For Pan Am TWA Reuters News Agnecy WASHINGTON Pan American and Trans World Airlines are likely to lose slightly more than million each in cal endar 1974 according to an official of the Civil Aeronautics Board Robert Sherer director of the CABs Bureau of Economics said Ms estimate was based on an analysis of forecasts made by an interagency group as a result of their visits to Pan Am and TWA earlier thisyear The boards analysis at this time showed a range in the low millions each for Pan American and TWA as the likely losses for 1974 Sherer told the Senate aviation subcommitte Sherers estimate was an amplification of a statement made by CAB Chairman1 Robert Timm that he expected the two airlinesto have combined losses of more than million Sherer said passenger traffic especial ly in the North Atlantic market is below 1973 levels He said this decline plus sharply higher fuel costs makes it unlike ly the routes will show a profit for the airlines in 1974 price will be sold at tte kwesi price The new Safeway poticy pricing meats groceries produce and fconfood products will go into effect about July 23 The Natktnal Association of Food Chains representing 200 companies wiU 20000 stores and billion in annual sales called Safeways action a gutsy ittove which probably will force compet itors io follow suit The repriciingof inventory has been coutroviersial lor some time said Dr Kent Christensen the trade asstvciations vice president and economist This may help quiet consumer con cern that stores have been profiteering he said If the public reacts strongly to this I would expect other chains to do the same thing to be competitive Cosmetic Coasamerism Carol Tucker Foreman executive di rector of the Consumer Federation of America said the Safeway policy was cosmetic consumerism because the chain is a member of the trade associa tion which has actively been lobbying against the Consumer Protection Agency bill now before the Senate Discussing the reason for the lowest price policy Safeway vice president John Bell told a news conference that frequent price changes both confuse and irritate our customers In the past he said food price in creases and decreases hadv pretty well balanced out for grocery shoppers But he said the recent inflationary spiral was definitely toward higher prices some times resulting in several sets of prices being marked in succession on the same can Safeway operates 2397 stores around the world The new pricing policy has been tested for a year and a half in 236 Canadian Safeways Mostly is West Of the 1950 US Safeways in 27 stales all are west of the Mississippi except for 169 stores in the Washington DC division When the price is lowered m an item packages will be sold at the tower price In the Salt Lake supermarket officials were hesitant to comment on the Safeway announcement A Iran Buys Krupp Plant Share By Clyde Hi Farnsworth New York Times writer PARIS The government of Iran is acquiring a 25 percent interest in the steelworks of the giant Krupp en terprise of West Germany it was an nounced Wednesday and obtained a foothold in the parent company itself The sale for an undisclosed sum marks the largest move yet of an oil producing stateinto an ownership po sition in western industry The accord was first signed last Friday in Teheran by Berthold Beitz chairman of Krupp and Hushang Ansary minister of economics in Iran Final approval was announced si multaneously Wednesday in Teheran and Essen West Germany following approvals by Helmut Schmit chancel lor and Hans Friderichs economics minister Business analysts commenting on the joint announcement from Teheran and Essen headquarters of the Krupp empire said they expected many sim flar arrangements in the future as oil producing nations seek out invest ments for the surplus funds they are building up following the quadrupling of oil prices last year Iran is one of the most actively en gaged of the producing countries in developing partnerships with western business Iran is buying for an undisclosed sum 2504 percent of the shares of Fried Krupp Huettenwerke the steel and engineering division of the Krupp The division employs 26000 workers in Bochum and Uheinhausen in the Ruhr and record ed sales last year of billion It pro duced 43 million tons of raw steel In 1973 Copyright British Columbia Lists Minerals Output Increase VICTORIA BC AP Mineral pro duction in British Columbia in 1973 amounted to billion a jump of 75 percent over the 1972 figure of million according to mines department figures released Wednesday The 1972 mineral production value was 207 percent higher than the previous year with the 1971 value totaling million The major portion of the 1973 increase resulted from a 73 percent increase in the value of metal production with a yearly total of million compared with million in 1972 v The value of fuels jumped 18 percent in 1973 with a total value of million structural metals Increased in value 7 percent to million and industrial metals increased just 2 percent to million More than half of the total value of mineral production in BC in 1973 accrued from copper production which was valued at million a 181 percent increasn over the previous year Copper production in 1973 increased 2476 million pounds bringing total pro duction to 7146 million pounds The next most valuable mineral was coal with a total value of million up 33 percent from 1872 Crude oil production was down about 27 million barrels in 1973 with a total production of 217 million barrels Increasing prices however resulted in an actual increase in the value of oil produced with
