out chances are it will be with the Cleveland Indians but dont bet he doesnt wind up with the New York Yankees for a third time Those are the only two clubs which have shown interest in the muchtraveled Martin who was fired from his sixth job Wednesday by the Oakland As Indians President Gabe Paul an old friend already has talked once with Martin while he was still the As manager and chances are he will talk with him again and very soon Martin was fired twice by the Yankees and now once each by the Minnesota Twins DetroitTigers Texas Rangers and As Oakland President Roy Eisenhardt gave Martin whose contract runs through 1985 the bad news Wednesday and said he w o u 1 d honor their agreement So Martin is not exactly penniless Over the next three years should he decide not to work he will collect a total of In addition there is a home in Blackwood an Oakland suburb that was given to him outright by the As a year ago in a gesture of gratitude for turning the Oakland franchise around But as in every other city where he has managed Martin wore out his with the As and Eisenhardt in announcing his firing said one must recognize the inevitability of change as a solution for difficult cir cumstances even when no party may seek or want a change That was Eisenhardts polite way of saying the As no longer could afford Martins behavior no matter how much he had done to improve the club At the bottom of Eisenhardts decision to fire Martin was the latters in sistence on keeping old players past their prime because they were his friends an incident in whiclvhe walked out in the middle of a game because he was upset at the way the As were playing and a temper tandrum in which Martin wrecked his ballpark office when the club refused to renegotiate his contract So now Martin who remained secluded and had no comment about his firing is gone from Oakland and the search begins for a replacement The club has no immediate plans to name a successor Eisenhardt said indicating the As will look over the field before making a decision But Eisenhardt said he to name an adviser by the end of next week and in that regard he already has talked with Bill Rigney Under reorganization Eisenhardt plans to move in and assume some of the general managers duties which Martin also ad ministered with the help of a seasoned adviser Rigney fits that mold perfectly since he is a former bigleague manager and currently is under con tract to the California Angels as an adviser to President BuzzyBavasi Rigney indicated to Eisenhardt when he talked with him OBrien also warned Wednesday the owners were prepared to cut rosters from 12 to 10 players and reduce fringe benefits and travel benefits if an impasse regarding a new contract occurred OBrien remained tight lipped about what the change regarding player com pensation was in the talks designed to work out a new collective bargaining agreement with the players NBA players have been without a contract since June 1 OBrien emerged from an unexpectedly short 90minute meeting of all NBA owners to say talks were continuing but it would not be in the best interests of either party to elaborate on the specifics At least one owners representative Jon Kovler of the Chicago Bulls indicated he was optimistic an agreement could be reached He said he saw little chance of a strike before the start of the season at the end of the month In the past two weeks there has been an important development in the collective bargaining negotiations between the NBA and the players association OBrien said in a prepared statement For the first time we have engaged in discussionswith the players concerning an entirely new Approach to the way in which player com pensation is structured Several NBA owners have been unhappy with the freeagency system in pro basketball that only allows teams losing free agents to match the offer a player receives from another team If the team losing the free agent does not match the offer the club loses the player without any player com pensation The freeagency system in basketball is considered by many to be the best in professional sports The average NBA salary this season is estimated at more than Although we hope these negotiations will be suc cessful the Board of Gover nors this morning reaffirmed its resolve to implement a variety of costsaving measures in the event of an impasse with the players OBrien said We expect that within the next week we will be better able to judge whether these discussions may be productive if it ap pears they are not likely to succeed we will proceed to implement the costsaving measures on impasse The owners also reportedly are seeking to eliminate all guaranteed contracts atf part of the overall cutting of fringe
