Tyrone Daily Herald (Newspaper) - January 13, 1981, Tyrone, Pennsylvania Tyrone Daily Herald Tuesday January 131981 Page three by Peg Hurd Feature Writer Everybodys allergic to something and until last week I thought nothing made me itch except penicillin Not so After a month of scratching a pair of itchy arms finally sent me to the dermatologist My goodness you DO have a rash he said I already knew thatsoI waited You have an irritation he said I waited some more That he said that its caused by something external not anything youre eating or drinking That was a relief All the way to keep the appointment I had had visions of a life without orange juice chocolate seafood or Bloody Marys Its caused by something that comes in contact with your he said Then he tooka dull needle and gave me a shot in my vulnerable left hip Now my task is clearan unremitting search for the source of the itch Detergent Ive been usine the some kind for 30 years Soap Same kind since I had a rubber ducky Spouse Same one for 34 years and six months Yesterday as I considered the possibilities my eyes turned to the cat cuddled beside me He looked guilty Wouldnt it be I said to the aforementioned long time spouse if I couldnt live in the same house with this cat Sure would he agreed Wed really miss you honey Theres one other possibility that scares me Lots of people are allergic to household dustand if thats my problem my case is terminal Most of us on occasion mangle the English languageand sometimes it comes out funny William Safire who writes a wordwatching column for the New York Times has written an interesting book On Language that reassures us about some of our mistakes It seems that the Great Permitters language liber tarians now say that its not necessary for a verb to agree with its subject I for one will never go along with that Its the English teacher in mesomethimes I find it difficult to read anything without using a mental red pencil to repair grammatical errors Now Safire reports that nobody needs to use singular pronouns with singular nouns in their writing In other words write like everybody Most of us look to TVs news Commentators for the ultimate in correct grammar but they are far from infallible How many times have you heard one of those oracles describe something as being very A chorus of the nations English teachers must be shouting at their television sets Dont you remember what we taught you Unique means the ONLY one of its kind There aint no such thing asvery unique ENGAGEDMr and Mrs Ben Woodring ST 813 W 15th Street Tyrone have an
