April 1865 was a Busy month in civil War history. Gen. Robert e. Lee surrendered on april 9. John Wilkes Booth assassinated president Abraham Lincoln on april 14. The funeral was april 19. The funeral train wound through Maryland new York Pennsylvania Ohio Indiana and Illinois from april 21 to May 3. It reminds me of a civil War letter my great great Grandfather Charles Dickerson wrote to his wife Cordelia on july 7, 1864, a few Days after the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain in Georgia. My Cousin Tom Andison gave it to me in 2006. Charles letter has a Story All its own and Tom is the hero in it. He rescued it from a fiery death in 1967 after my Grandfather Bill Anderson moved out of his House to live his final Days in a nursing Home. Grandpas youngest sister Isabel came to clean the House and Tom closed my grandfathers business the Mayville mercantile & co., As my Grandfather wanted. Tom stopped by the House one Day to Check on Isabel. She proudly announced that she burned All of my grandparents old family photos and letters stored in a Beautiful carved Chest of drawers that she wanted to ship to her daughter in Missouri. Tom was appalled. He grew up with the letter. My grandmother read it to him countless times when he was a Little boy. She loved and took care of it always putting it Back in the Telephone table drawer not the Chest of drawers. Tom was the Only living person who knew the letter existed in 1967. He checked the Telephone table when Isabel left the room. The letter was still there. He put it in his jacket pocket and later placed it in an envelope to give to me when i was older and would appreciate it More. I was 18 and just starting College. Tom delivered it to me four decades later. My life has never been the same.
