Its most famous scholar was Stephen Collins Foster who was placed in the Academy in 1840 by his brother William and1 Stephen probably attended the Winter. Spring and summer term. In the fall he was enrolled in the Athens Academy More than Likely i because the trustees had been unable to secure a principal. About ten other Towanda boys accompanied him. The Academy with its ups and Downs continued until 1854 when it closed because of the starting of another educational institution in the town the Susquehanna collegiate Institute. The Academy was deeded Over by the trustees to the new school and used for a Short time by them but being located too far from the s. C. 1.1 it was finally abandoned As a school and sold to a private individual. It has been a Home for nearly one Hundred years and is at present owned and occupied by or. Robert Maclaren. This is the Centennial of the opening of the Susquehanna collegiate Institute generally known by Bradford count ians As the s. C. 1.1 it was founded in 1850 by the presbytery of Susquehanna of the presbyterian Church. The Corner Stone was Laid july 4, 1853. And the oration was Given by David Wilmot. The building was completed in 1854 and opened on sept. 6, 1854. The principal was Rev. Samuel f. Colt assisted by a faculty of four. The greatest Fame of the institution was under the principalship of Edwin e. Quinlan. Who was at the head for Over 25 j years. The s. C. I. During its Long his-1 tory graduated Over 1,200, Many of whom became teachers in our county schools. Many entered the 1 ministry. Previous to 1890 the average enrolment was about 120 per year. From 1890 the school sup ered in Competition with the Many schools which i a been opened All Over the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It finally had to close in 1906. The building was used by the Public schools of Towanda for several years following the burning of the High school and j Grade school building in 1914. This j Fine four Story Brick building with its ten acres of grounds was purchased by the Borough of Towanda the top two floors removed and made into a Community building for the people of the Borough. 1 through a Bond Issue the building is now being remodeler into a Complete Community service build j ing of which Towanda May indeed be proud. The Commonwealth finally realized the need for free and Public schools and in 1848 passed the Public school Law. A Fine building of j two stories was erected in 1851-52i at the Northeast Corner of Pine j and second and was used for Many years. In 1873 the school Board erected a Fine Brick three Story j building at the head of state St., which was used As a Grade and High school. It was destroyed by fire on january 19. 1914.
