prepared it can bo kept in line condition with very littlo trouble Tho clippings of tho crass aflbrd tho materials for insur ing a constant growth A London hor tiJiilturiil journal contains an article on tho management of lawns that will bo of value to people iu this country Somo of its suggestions aro as follows It has been said and with much truth that there is nothing which adds so jrreat a charm toEuglish homesteads as the lawns or grass plats that aro generally to be found surrounding hem and as this is the season to form relay or repair them a few re aiiarks as to the proper mode of pro cedure mav possibly bo Useful In forming new lawns it is hardly necos sarv that their extent must bo dependent on tho ground at command everv endeavor should however bo used to make them as roomy pos sible and toward this end much may bo done by placing tho shrubs and trees or at least tho greater part of them as far away from tho house as tho boundary will permit any that stand out ought to bo of tho best kind A lawn need not necessarily be Hat or level it may on tho contrary bo un dulating according to tho naiural for mation of tho ground In preparing tlio latter for thu turf the most import ant thing is to seo that any portion which has boon moved is well rammed for it not it will bo continually subsid ing and nothing looks worse than lit caused by the settling of earth Another important matter to boar hi mind is that tho soil of liwus should nut bo rich for if so tho grass not only grows fast but coarse and it is im possible under such circumstances to a good thick bottom or to keep it in anything a t10 Perfect order at tainable when tho roots aro less fed This being so it is a good plan to uso sand or to cart poor earth for the kv elintr and iuishing olV of the top but when so applied it should be put on regularly or the grass will bo patchy wlTiuh will spoil the effect of the whole The leveling being completed and the surface mked smooth and line thu next thing is either to sow seed or uso turf the latter being by the best wav for though it involves moro labor time and expense the work is at onco complete while if seed be sown it takes a year to get a good bottom Tho mot iiuitable turf is that from pastures or waste places by the nmdsido which IKIYO been closely fed oil anil the grass is short and tine with a sprinkling of white clover in it If the turf of this kind can be got a fine lawn may ioun be made Tho most handy turfs to work with are those yard long Jiml a foot wide nnd the thinner they are so long as they will hang togollnr the easier will theV roll and lay down again No open joints slioukl be left for thu air to get in to prevent this it is a good plan lo pass the roller over the turfs quickly after they an down so us to press them to the earth in which the grass will soon take root If any inequalities of surface should by chance exist after the roller has been used they miy easily be beaten down by of a ramfuor when tho ground is soft Where line turf can not be had and seed has to be sown it should bo got spedally for the purpose from some seedman as that otherwise obtained is full of wrfiLs and never makes a good lawn The timo to sow is about the middle of March when the seed should be scattered evenly over tho surface of thu limly raked ground and slightly covered after which if birds are kept from scratching it out and devouring it it soon germinates and grows at a quick rate if the weather proves favor able Lawns that arc in a thin patchy con dition mav be improved in two ways Jw ono by cutting out the baro or worn parts and relaying with ila and tho other by u topdressing of rich finely sifted soil to which should be added somo soot and fresh slaked lime which will not only stimu late the grass and give it a rich deep crceu color but will also kill all moss which on some lawns is very trouble some and if not checked or destroyed soon gets entire possession Daisies and plantains too aro often a nuis ance and to eradicate these weeds there is no plan better than cutting or them out which unless they arerich is no great task if set about in real earnest with a sharp and suitable tool TUT KKST ISEE3 Of races of bees l hero are now two that are very widely dillusud in Ameri old Jerman bee and thu Ital ian bee Of thcso two there is no doubt but tho Italian is on the whole much tho superior It is more hardy more prolific moro industrious and more docile To prefer the black bee to the Italian is much as it would bo for ono who ii breeding cattle to pre fer tho common scrubs to the beautiful Sliorthouis Hcrefords Jerseys or Avrshires No beekeeper can ailbrd to keep tho blacks To change from tho blacks lo the Italians is a very easy tiling To do this it is necessary in the first place to got a pure Italian iiuoun There aro several reasons why it is best to get an imported queen which can nw bo done easily and cheaply as there arc several importers who receive frequent invoices of them every Summer These imported queens vnry in price You can now pet a good ono for from to Having ob tained your queen you put her in a lit tle which may vo but a small piece of wire cloth rolled up and a corn cob stopper put in each end Or you can uso other improved cages which havo somo advantages that 1 cannot now stop to mention Having your imported queen you go to tho hivo in which you wish to introduce her open it lift out tho combs one after another ind carefully examine them until you find tho queen belong to the hive then romovo her 11 sho is inferior better kill hor at once If Him is pretty good you can make another swarm with her Having found find removed tho old queen you can hang tho cage containing your im ported qiioen between combs and shut up tho hivo and leuvo it from iwentvfour to fortyeight hours By this timo tho bees in tho hivo will havo found out that tho old quoon is gone and that there is u new queen in Llio caoe and tho caged queen will mivo acquired the Hcent of the hive Then open tho hive romovo tho corncob stopper from tho lower end of the eae and put A stopper of comb honey in Its place Put tho cage back oloso tho hive and tho bees will very soon oat through tho stopper of honey and release the queen She will be accept ed as the queen of tho hive You havo now a colony of black bees with Italian mioen Of courso all her eggs will bo Italian und tho hews roared from them will bo Italians During tho working season tho worker bees live only about mix weeks tho old ones uro constantly dyin off their places being takou by the young boos that aro reared in tho hive Hence in a few weeks tho black bees in this hive to which you have in troduced your imported quoun will bo dead nud their places supplied by young Italians tho product of hor eggs IKOlAOArrNO TUEKS Tho following novel plan of propn valuable trees is given by a cor respondent of VicVs Magazine A year aoo last July a latentbud on n lemon tree which I have started nnd rapidly grew to tho length of nboui three foot and then parted into three or four branches Last March I girdled this shoot near the main stem by removing a band of bark about an inch wide cutting down to tho hard wood Arotiml the place thus laid baro 1 built a small wooden tub filled It with earth and kept it moiit Being abroad during tho summer the brunch suffered from neglect but upon my return I found that it had well rooted Having cut tho stem I pottod it aud now it is full of small blossoms so numerous that it would bo troublesome to couut them Thus eighteen mouths since it was a latent bud and iu less than a year since it was layered as described I havo a lemontree rooted and ca pable of bearing blossoms and fruit With equal success I havo propagated tho India rubber tree in the same way and doubtless it will succeed well with every plant capable of boing girdled It seems to mo that this mode has thcso advantages By it tho strength of tho stem is unimpaired and thus danger of breakage and need oi sup ports avoided tho supply of nourish ment from tho parent plant is undi initiishod as tho upward flow of sap is through the vessels in tho now wood which aro not cut aud the return llow which is by tho bark or between the bark and the stem is checked entirely in a complete circle around the stem for tho rapid and vigorous formation of roots By thu usual mode that of making a slit tho branch is weakened tho supply of nourishment is onehalf cut off and the return llow of sap by which the roots are formed only partly impeded Suggestion Alight not even trees which have been acciden tally barked bo saved by girdling them wilh a sharp knife constructing a box around the exposed part filled with ftarth the roots thus formed finally iachiiiir and penetrating the ground could be raised around tho liase of tlio tree high enough to receive the new roots und lead them down into tlio ground In the case of injury to valuable trees thuir usefulness might thus possibly be prolonged for a time SILLKKUSINO Once in a while some writer for tho agricultural papers arousos to the Tealnoss and multiplicity of the virtues of the mulo and writes a paragraph on the subject Then the matter drops ami the excellences of the longcared musician are forgotten or aro remem bered faintly by those who believe that the worth of llio hybrid is temper ed by a yet greater eussedness pure and uiuieliled Perhaps this is tho reason that so few farmers in the North have seen their profit in raising these oncieared embodiments of energy and melody The popular notion seems to be that mules are of all created beings except perhaps the mules father ho most contrary and have the nimblest and uiost untrustworthy of iieels But there are those who know ng tlio mule well from long acqiiaint niTe declare that no better boast of inirdou lives that if properly treated uul well trained in the earlier decades of their existence they aro goodtemp jred quiet and reasonably obedient hat to raise a mulo requires less outlay care and cash than will bo required u raising a colt of liko age that when raising ino mulo will bring a better price than can bo got for tho average colt of tho samo and age and that tho mule is tougher will live far longer do more work anil somo timo or other will die harder than will tho best horso over known Kven when horses wero almost unsal able in the hard limes following tho last panic tho demand for mules was steady and strong at prices higher than could bo obtained at tho timo for horses of corresponding ago and weight Tho extension of mining operations tho opening ofnow farms and tho in creased number of animals required for working a yearlyincreasing area of will doubtless sustain and increase tho demand for mules as it has in tho past They have never fallen in price below a paying figure and seem less likely now than ever to do so as the moro general tho acquaintance with thorn becomes tho moro rapidly they scorn to grow in favor wilh those who havo heavy work for teams to do Is it not possible that tho farmers who iind the growinir of wheat and corn un profitable might find tiic raising of milos a pleasant and paying branch of business How They in Mexico It is not oasy to say how tho rulo which authorises only a light morning meal became established Perhaps it is an instance of the survival of the 1H the fittest arrangement for tho climate and tho habits of tho people Strangers soon fall into this order of things and Americans pronounce it in finitely for to that to which they havo been accustomed Two full repasts appear to bo stillicient for tho preservation oi life and vigor in thio latitude arid longitude Possibly tho Mexican plan would work well in tho United States Doubtless tho habit spending tho evening in Mio open air with late hours is not conductive 10 oarly rising or the prolongation of tin business forenoon at its former end Tho favorite hours in tho higher circles for visiting the plaza are between a and 11 oclock in tho evening And yat it is no uncommon thing to find govern ment officials busy at work at 7 iu tho morning As a rulo coffee botwecn 8 and in is the only introduction to breakfast between noon and one oclock Those who can afford tho timo sleep after dinner Tho siesta habit in form er days lod to the universal closing of business places between 12 and 8 oclock and this unenterprising cus tom still prevails some extent in cer tain places Between tho noon and evening meals there is no groat difference Both havo meals in abundance and of various kinds except sweet juicy roasts which uro rare And in both thero is a sur prising lack of vegetables No markets in thoworld contain finer displays and more varieties of vegetables than thoso of Moxico no hotels or restaurants in the world can havo fewur vegetables upon their tables The only explana tion of this singular anomaly is that tho cooks aro not in tho habit of preparing them Co tit Louis J lobeDemocrat An Ugly ArraiiKomcMU M
