PlfHM’ I’ll) I (I. ••I AM JOSEPH—YOUR BROTHER By Meredith Nicholson So long aa there is misery ami heartache in the world the world is not right. The thought that as I walk the streets of this prosperous and happy town there are ti,OOO,UUU people in other lands without food. shelter or raiment is disturbing. I do not like it. The tact that these people are a long wa> from my home does not lighten my responsibility for their plight, for the great war has so knit mankind together that wherever a man, woman or child of any race is hungry or homeless or the victim of cruelty, there, indeed, is my neighbor. Of all the passions of men that which manifests itself in race hatred is the most despicable. The business of civilization is nciii-plete so long as one man anywhere hates another because of his faith, his blood or Ins color. When I read, as I have read all my life, pl th< persecution and slaughter of the Jews I am not proud of my own raw or of my religion. The most beautiful story in the world is the story of Joseph and his brethren. I wish that every child who knows and loves that story might contribute to the fund of the .Jewish relief committee. The lessons of tolerance, forgiveness, mercy and helpfulness are summed there with incomparable art. Let us ponder a little. What we should do with this appeal from the land of famine i- to give generously of t orn “and put every man s money in his sat k 1 mouthV "And put my cup." said Joseph, “the silver cup in the sack s mouth of the youngest and his corn money. ' That was Josephs idea—to add to the value of his gut by putting his heart into it. 'I'liis appeal is not to Jews or Christians, but to humanity. It should be a high privilege for those of us who have so long enjoyed the hearty co-operation of our Jewish fellow-! itizens iii every good (alisp to provu to them now our neighborliness and our appreciation of their generosity. The public spirit, patriotism and liberality of the Jewish people °f Indiana need no advertisement. They have rarely asked our aid in tilt ir benevolences, but always they have helped with ours. All tho more readily we should respond to this cry for help which they utter, not in the name of their own ] coble, but for all who dwell in the lands of lambie and desolation Six million people perishing! The re a not much joy in that tea v ent and me la i the -a Us be tilled, and Joseph s cup, the silver cup of love at.J broth-riice: .n and good will, be thrust into the top of every one.
