The Morgantown Monitor (Newspaper) - March 21, 1863, Morgantown, West VirginiaHe to motor. A free , beneath the Sway of mild and equal Laws Fram ii by themselves one people dwell and own no lord save god w. P. W1lley, \ editors and proprietors g. C. Sturgis i Morgantown mar. 21,1863. Editorial correspondence Mindenville 0., mar. 10, 1863. Dear Monitor on the morning of the 20th of february we left the Good people of Morgantown gently slumbering in their Beds dreaming perhaps of War and carnage or o f the time when peace should again shed her smiling influence Over our distracted country and As we left the town behind us and began to realize that we were really on our Way to revisit the scenes of our childhood from which we had been absent for some years who can describe the Peculiar feel Ings which filled our mind Well do we remember when we first Star Ted from the roof of our widowed Mother with her Blessing on our head and Only fifty cents in our pocket to seek our Fortune by the Way we have not As yet found it Benj we will not Stop to describe Trie ups and Downs particularly the Downs with which we have met in our Short life. Suffice it to say that by some hocus pocus we settled at Morgan town and the rest is known to your readers. Nothing worthy of note took place the first Day and the Only thing that attracted our attention was the depth of the mud reaching sometimes to the Axle but As " Caney " had provided four fresh horses we were enabled to make Fairmont in time for the cars going West. And Here we would remark that no where did we meet with such bad roads almost impassable As in Western Virginia. We arrived at Wheeling in the even ing putting up at the Monroe House now under the management of Hiram Kinsey who can most emphatically c keep a hotel and in the Best of style. We would advise our friends when at Wheeling to give him a Call. We had intended to drop in upon the convention and to note their proceedings and take pen portraits but were prevented by its adjourn ment on the same Day we arrived however we were More than paid for this disappointment by the Diligence which they displayed in attending to x. O the business before them which our people will highly appreciate. From what we saw at Wheeling we Are satisfied that there will be Little if any. Opposition to the adoption of the amended Constitution. Those who Are opposed to a new state will not generally vote at least this is our opinion draw from what we have seen and heard. So the friends of the new state need not fear. By the Way i see that the Washington a examiner draws from our silence on the subject the Singu Lar conclusion that we Are tzoin"1 ton o oppose the new state. Quite a mis take Friend examiner. We do not deem it Worth while to say anything upon this subject at present for we consider it settled by the people in the affirmative Long since. We have found that there is More opposition to the new state movement at the North than we anticipated partly on constitutional grounds and partly from fear of complicating the difficulties already harassing the country. After a stay of several Days in the City of Wheeling employed in canvassing for the paper and meeting with Good Success we renewed our journey going to Wellsville and thence to Cleveland where we spent some time very pleasantly visited the Monument erected to the memory of Commodore Perry two or three years ago and Many other places of interest. The Monument is an Orna ment to the City and reflects great credit upon the Genius of the artist who designed and sculptured it As Well As upon the liberality of the contributors. I took occasion while in this City to walk Down some of the streets on which i had figured As a varnish boy when first starting out. They called to my mind Many scenes in which the " varnish boy was a prominent actor. A Young Friend who shared with me the fluctuating fortunes of varnishing is now a wholesale commission merchant of new York with every Prospect of. " Success and usefulness. All Honor to the varnish pot and Brush which was our first Friend. Taking the cars on the Cleveland and Erie Railroad we were soon la Wing merrily along through an of a level country dotted Here and there with Large White farmhouses and Little cottages. This Section of the state called the Western re serve is a Fine agricultural and Dairying country. Every where you see the evidence of Thrift and Energy properly directed. However one soon wearied of the Monotony of tiie scenery in spite of the evidence of wealth Ami High cultivation and Longs for the Mountain roughness of Western Virginia we arrived at Linden Ville on tues Day evening and have been eve since enjoying the pleasure of a re i Union with old friends and school mates. We will return in the course of this week to Morgantown but i you shall hear from us again. After a Good Deal of inquiry we i find that a great change has taken place in this Section of country in reference to the Grea political questions of the Day. Constitution Lov ing men of West Virginia May take courage. The masses of the North Are to. Doubt in favor of a vigorous pro cution of the War for the Only i Legi mate object for which it was inaugurated Viz the restoration of the supremacy of the Constitution and the Laws Over the whole Union but Are unalterably opposed to the rolling up and laying away upon an upper shelf of the a plan proposed by some of the diag nates of the new state. The Folly of such a course is so Parent that it needs by Jeffi be a Fotij a to and Cwa embed. It is evident that the reign of radicalism is ended. Yours in haste it. C. S. The great american statesman. Interesting details in the life and his tory of Daniel Webster. A correspondent of the Aeji Loric keening lost writing from the Home of Daniel Webster,.marshfield, Jass communicates some inter i Esling details in regard to the con tents of or. Fletcher Webster s Forth coming collection of his father s Cor Respondence which will he published in the coming Winter by messes. Little Brown & co., of Boston Webster and Randolph. The Challenge received by Webster from John i Vandolph while the were both members of the rational House of representatives takes up a portion of the correspondence. Inthis affair gen. Wool of n. Acted As the Friend and adviser o i or. Webster and senator of the challenging party. The sin Gular deception of Monroe Edwards a Practised upon lord Spencer is also told at length. It May be remembered that in 184o, while this Noto rious individual was in England he presented to lord Spencer a forged letter of introduction from Ster and took advantage of the civilities extended to him on that account. To borrow of that Nobleman the sum of 300, having been foiled As he pretended in some negotiations he had lately undertaken. Shortly after lord Spencer hear ing something which led him to suspect the True character of Edwards wrote to or. Webster stating the circumstance and ins suspicions but declaring that he was nevertheless Jalad of the Opportunity of Thor show ing his regard for or. Webster and those who bore his recommendation. To this or. Webster returned an answer denying an acquaintance with Edwards and exposing him As a bad character but in the meantime the adroit forger had managed to pay up and before receiving the answer lord Spencer wrote another letter announcing that Edwards had acted like an honorable Man and apologizing for Ever having harboured a suspicion against or. Webster s Friend. Webster s Youthful struggles. A very pleasant part of the orcs a prudence Are the letters of or. W be Ster written while a Law student to his brother Ezekiel who was Strug gling to pay for his education a i keeping school in Boston. All the spare Cash which Daniel could earn by teaching or copying deeds had been devoted to his brother s College expenses but his income was too Nar Row to meet them fully. Several of the letters relate to the subject of de visin0, Means of raising Money to de fray a debt of $50, which Ezekiel had incurred in the Purchase of books in Boston. This caused the two Brothers great perplexity. In one of his epistles Daniel after try in a to cheer Zeke by an enumeration of the possibilities which yet remained for raising Money enters upon the following Strain of Philo Sophic Consolation Salisbury nov. 4th, 1802. I have now by me two cents in lawful Federal currency. Next week i will Send them if they be All. They will buy a pipe. With a pipe Volt can implies Wisdom. Wisdom is Allied to Forti fortitude there is but one step to stoicism and stoicism never pants for this world s goods. So perhaps Ray two cents by this pro Cess May put you quite at ease about Atrain As late As june 10th, 1804, he writes from Salisbury a after having declined a comfortable office in order to pursue his profession " Zeke i Don t believe but what Providence will do Well for us yet. We shall live and live have this week come within an Ace of being appointed clerk of the court of common pleas for Hillsborough county. Well you will say you Are no better off than if you had not come within an Ace. Perhaps i am say nothing but think a Good Deal and do not distrust the gods " ii thinks of poetry and the pulpit. In conclusion of this letter to his brother of june 10th, he relieves his mind of the following verses Fol i Dodo i Doi Dol i la never make Money my idol with my Friend and Ziy Pitcher i m Twenty times Richer than if i made Money my idol Fol i Dol Dol i Dol i Dol it May be remarked Here that or. Webster in the midst of his family and with his children and grand children around was not a Little Given to off hand rhyming and would greatly divert them by his extempore English heroics in which the Sonor Ous March of the rhythm would be humorously disproportion de to the trifling nature of his theme. But the poet s was not the Only vocation which the great statesman narrowly escaped. At one time in his youth some of his friends ear Nestly pressed upon him the duty of entering the Christian ministry and lie was wont to Tell with evident enjoyment the Story of his Beins advised to assume the business of necromancy an old Man who enjoyed the reputation in his native Vil Lage of his being a wizard assured Young Daniel that he was just made for a conjurer and As there were at that time a great Many stray cattle to be found the business offered a Good opening. He concluded by offering to take tiie future statesman into partnership and go halves with him in the profits ii Jav " ii became a a hiked Man. While on the subject of or. Web Ster s history i cannot forbear men tinning an incident related of his courtship which i do not remember to have seen recorded. He was then a Young lawyer in Portsmouth n. H. At one of his visits to miss i race Fletcher he had probably with a View of combining Utility and enjoy ment been holding skeins of thread for her when suddenly he stopped saying t Grace we have thus been engaged in untying knots let us see if we can tie a knot one which will not untie for a he then took a piece of tape and after be ginning a knot of a Peculiar kind save it to her to this was the ceremony and ratification of their engagement. And now in a Little Box marked by him with the words precious documents containing the letters of his Early courtship this unique memorial is still to be found. The knot has never been untied. His Ait Broor a pit v. Perhaps the most interesting relic of or. Webster which will be incorporated in these volumes will be his autobiography As yet unpublished written by him in the year 182for his Friend . B. Lee of Boston. It is written in his Clear legible hand and covers sixty three pages of letter paper. The time Over which the narrative extends is from his birth in 1 7s2 to his final settlement As a lawyer in Boston in isl i. The first four years of his congressional Lite Are thus taken in while he rep resented new Hampshire in the House of representatives. The whole history of his Humble beginning his struggles to obtain an education his experience As a collegian and Law student the books lie read his first efforts at newspaper writing Are Here related with something of that simplicity and absence of Reserve As Well As with an occasional weight Ness of remark which lend a Charm to the autobiographies of Gibbon and Franklin. He also at times alludes to his eminent contemporaries in the Legal profession of whom he places his Friend the distinguished Jeremiah Mason at the head and i observed two Ela borate parallels copied by him from his journal written while a Law Stu Dent in Boston Between Samuel Dex ter and Theophilus Parsons then the two rival leaders of the Boston bar evincing no Little discrimination and Power of intellectual analysis. His first meeting with gov. Gore into whose office be first entered to pursue the Law is told quite amusingly. He was then quite a raw Young Man from the country and Felt obliged to make a Long and Stu died apology for the want of letters of introduction which he offered to go and procure. Gov. Gore however who appears to have been Satis fied by inspection of the character of his visitor Cut him Short by telling him to come Back hang up his hat., and sit Down to his books at once adding that he might procure the letters at his adjournment of the Senate.
