Com by Samantha House Shouse Syracuse. Com More cases of synthetic marijuana have been reported in Onondaga county than in All of the other 53 counties outside of the greater new York City area. Of the 414 synthetic marijuana Calls received by the upstate new York Poison Center this year 256 came from Onondaga county. Thatus 62 percent of the Calls received by the Center which covers All counties other than Westchester Nassau Suffolk and new York Cit yes five counties. The closest volume of Calls came from Broome county where health care providers reached out to the Center 20 times. The centers data is compiled solely from Calls made by providers hailing from each of the 54 counties monitored by the Center said administrative director Michele Caliva. Because providers dont Call every time they treat a patient who had a bad reaction to synthetic marijuana Caliva believes the number of people abusing the drug is absolutely understated. The data does not include cases investigated by police without the involvement of medical personnel she said. It also does not include Calls the Center received directly from citizens. The 2015 swell started in april when the Center experienced a Sharp unprecedented Rise in reported cases of synthetic marijuana Caliva said. Since 2011, Onondaga county has accounted for the bulk of the centers Calls. Synthetic marijuana better known As Spike or spice Calls have surged by 540 percent in Onondaga county since that time. Synthetic marijuana is created by spraying a chemical onto dried herbs Caliva said. The drug often marketed As incense is unregulated making it impossible for users to know exactly what they re inhaling. Its supposed to look like marijuana she said. It is much much More potent than marijuana and much More dangerous. Statewide synthetic marijuana use spiked in 2011. The Center started to see a drop in cases after the state outlawed the drug in 2012, forcing the drug to disappear from head shop shelves Caliva said. But users and dealers eventually found new ways to restock their supplies. Synthetic marijuana is still Legal in some states and is easy to buy online Caliva said. And this Spring the drug returned to Onondaga county with a vengeance. Caliva said the Center and Law enforcement Are searching for answers to Why Onondaga county has been hit so hard. Were All puzzled she said. We dont know Why Syracuse is leading the pack across the nation. Caliva speculates that a particularly bad Batch of synthetic marijuana which made its Way into Onondaga county contributed to the surge. The drug was so harmful that it May have forced More users than Ever to seek medical care. Users have arrived in local emergency rooms displaying an array of symptoms Caliva said. Some patients Are agitated and violent the reaction health care providers Are accustomed to seeing from people who overdose on synthetic marijuana. Recently sleepy patients with Low heart rates have been More prevalent. Its a really bad Batch Caliva said. Its All bad. By Tim Knauss Knauss Syracuse. Com they disagree about whose fault it is.
