following report on the mat ters before them That on the 80th day of contract was entered Into between the city of Sterling and the Sterling Gas which agreement is now in the hands of the City and reads as follows see whereby for five years one hundred and eighty or more lights of twentyfive caudle power were to be the same to be fin ished in ninety days from that time Belaya occurred until 1889 when the company presented the fol lowing communication To the Mayor and Council of tht City of Sterling In compliance with the request o your committee who waited upon we respectfully make the folio win statement After entering into a contract wit the the city for lighting the streets with Incandescent we secured a wa ter power under a good stage o will develop one hundred am lifty horse while at no time d we peed to exceed seventyfive horse and having been familiar with the nature of Rock river for the pas twentyfive we had no reason tc fear BO low a stage of water that th ifllniuium all expecta ions of ours and the unusual stage of we find ourselves short of power or one or two hours on two evenings fthe team plant cannot be furnished at and to go upon the market now nd buy would all our re and we respectfully ask our indulgence for a reasonable time during which time we shall use very effort to urge the completion of nr steam and also on the nights when we llnd we are short the want of power matter the Council cannot other than by refusing to make any more payments under the So far as can be learned from the Com mittee on nothing has been done by the company towards putting n steam power to aid the water rVithout this being no improve ment on present light can be expect and until the requirements of con Tact are carried out and accepted by the Council no money
