OPENED THE SEASON.Boston Professional Footballists Defeatthe Brooklyn Team. The opening game of the professional football league at the South End grounds yesterday was hardly a brilliant beginning. Boston and Brooklyn were the contesting teams, and Boston won. The attendance w*as rather small. The Boston team was the recipient of applause as it trotted on the inclosure, rigged out in natty uniforms of whiteblouses and dark knickerbockers. The Bostons had the wind against them in the llrst half and made their gains by good dribbling and excellent passing. It was just ten minutes before the pigskin was shoved between Brooklyn s goal posts. After this the Bostons failed to rally to any effect and were constantly on the defensive the rest of the half. The ball was in Boston’s territory most of the time, and the goal tend, Irving, made some beautiful stops of some hard trys for his goal. Brooklyn managed to score a goal toward the end of the half.In the second half the Bostons started away like a flash and Robertson put the sphere behind the opposing goal in thirty seconds. He followed it up later by another, making a total of three. The play became fast and furious as the limit of time of the half was nearly up. The Brooklyn team massed around the Boston goal and were successful in adding onemore point. The Boston forwards had a good combination, and their team work was the feature of the match.
