E. F. Root, who by his marvelloussprinting powers made it possible for himand his teammate, Oliver Dorlin, to winthe big six-day bicycle race that finishedlast evening at Madison Square Garden,New York, is a Melrose boy but 20 years of age.| As an amateur rider he was one of tho best in this section, and was a general favorite at both Charles River Park and ' Revere Beach tracks when the outdoor | sport was at its height, j In 1902 he joined the professional ranks and rode with the other professional riders in the national circuit of the National Cycling Association.This year he has showed remarkable powers as a sprinter in the races held in the vicinity of New York, and at the championships held in St. Louis this summer he won more than his share of the prizes.Unlike Leander and Walthour, the winners of the past three years, he is not a pace follower.Root's Third Six-Day RaceThis was his third six-day race.
