Spirit Lake Beacon (Newspaper) - June 12, 1975, Spirit Lake, Iowa Abstractions In Oil At The Lakes Art Center Going on exhibit at Ihe Lakes Art Center on Highway 71 in Okoboji in the North Gallery on June 15 through June 28 will be the 18 Abstractions in Oil by Bea Bergman The abstract oil paintings of Bea Begman are based on nature forms and the seasonal effects of nature Orchestration of patterns and colors she plays shadowy low key areas against bright sunny forms for poetical completed compositions She studied at the National Academy of Design Art Students League and the Anne E Mellzer School of Art She is director of Artists Equity of New York and has exhibited through the J S Japan Hong Kong and Canada These are circulated on National Tour by Old Bergen Art Guild of Bayonne New Jersey and are for sale ranging from to The exhibits in the West Gallery include the Wood Sculptures of Allan Duud of Spirit Lake He is selftrained and has his own style as a woodcarver doing it just as a hobby His carvings on exhibit include 3dimensional free standing items as well as relief carving in walnut and pine and various small pieces Larry Greenwalt is a com mercial artist of Shenandoah whose paintings and sketches will also be in the West Gallery One of his pictures was used on the 1974 Bell Telephone calendar A rosernaling demonstration by Mrs Frieda Larson of Forest City will be held on Sunday afternoon from 2 to 3 June 15 at the Art Center This is the Norwegian folk art painted on wood and metal Mrs Larson studied under Sigmund Arseth of Norway Lessons in Kosemaling for both beginners and advanced students will begin June 16 and continue for four weeks on Monday and Tuesday of each week both morning and evening sessions Books and Tilings of Spencer is continuing lessons on Tuesday from to pm in needlepoint devoting most of the time to the Aran pillow A colorful display of their wall hangings rugs and pillows will be jap until June 15 Also on Tuesday evenings through July 8 Gary Riecke of Kulhven is conducting lessons in woodcarving Many of his creations are on display at the Center The grandopening of the Lakes Art Center for the 1975 season held on Sunday af ternoon June 1 was very well attended Karla LaCasse of Des Moines greeted people in the North Gallery where her exhibit of Tribal Art and Jewelry of New Guinea is on display Teachers of the Art Center who were present included Mrs Denise Cook of Algona Carolyn Clague and Hichard Williams both instructors at the Iowa Lakes Community College at Estherville Hal Tuttle in structor in the Sheldon school system Mrs Freida Larson of Forest City aqci Gary Riecke teacher at South Clay school The Spirit Lake Music Club sang selections from Members singing were Rosie Ratterree Margaret Northey Marcia Anderson Ron Roetman Bob Kuiper Don Clausen Jo Roetman Carolyn Butterworth and Deanna Kuiper with Wilma Clausen accompaning at the piano Other music en tertainment during the af ternoon was by Teresa Beal guitarist and vocalist Elizabeth Parriott assisted by Gail Porter at the piano and solo pianist Mary Evans Hostesses for the event were Margie Shriver Lola Association attending the 72nd annual convention June 19 20 and 21 at The New Inn The industrial leaders will also hear an editor of The Wall Street Journal and U S Senator Richard C Clark in morning work sessions The editor of Better Homes and Gardens will speak at the womens sessions The theme of the convention will be The Challenge of Change Christopher J Hegarty of Tiburon Calif president of the C J Hegarty Company a management consulting company will speak on Transcendental Meditation in the Executive Suite He also will moderate a morning quest ionanswer period Saturday June 21 U S Senator Richard Clark DIowa will deliver the keynote address at 9 am Friday June 20 at the Con vention Hall Robert L Bartley of New York editor of the editorial page of The Wall Street Journal will speak on Con stants in a World of Change Mr Bartley a graduate of Iowa State University at Ames was editor of the Iowa State Daily and later was a reporter photographer for the Grinnell HeraldRegister He joined The Wall Street Journal in Chicago later moved to Philadelphia and then to New York Key speaker for the womens session will be James A Autry of Des Moines vice president of Meredith Corporations magazine division and editor of Better Homes and Gardens About 350 manufacturers and their wives will open their convention with a cruise and social hour on the Empress Thursday night The threeday event will include business meetings election of officers golf and bridge tourneys and a banquet W F Vernon Jr of Newton president of the Vernon Company and chairman of the board of the I M A will preside Other lMA officers are Charles W Wilson president of Wilson Concrete Co Red Oak vice chairman R H Meier general manager of the John Deere Ottumwa Works treasurer and Fred Ertl Jr president of the Ertl Company Dyersville secretary J S Craiger of Des Moines is president The parents of the late Dr Kent Rens of Milford Mr and Mrs Genit Rens of Orange City presented to the Dickinson County Memorial Hospital Monday the memorial funds given by Dr Rens family and friends Also attending the presen tation were Tracie Rens daughter of Dr Rens Dorothy Born and Pam Kaiser Dr Rens former offices nurses Jim Murray pharmacist of Milford and Lynne Moeller a close friend of Dr Rens The funds are to purchase two Emergency Package Carts These carls will be placed at the nurses stations and will be used as the first line emergency cart to take right to the patients bedside if an emergency such as a cardiac arrest should arise This combination of ac cessories and carts provides standby oxygen intravenous solutions and holder cardiac back board a resuscitation kit to provide artificial respiration and a variety of drug and supply items Staff physicians have ex pressed appreciation for this memorial gift as it will allow for the rapid availability of emergency equipment drugs and supplies In situations when seconds count these emergency carts may well prove to be lifesavers THE SPOUT LAKE BEACON 3 Thursday June 12 1975 Summer Band Lessons Begin Monday At SLHS Summer band lessons for over 200 Spirit Lake Community School students will begin next week according to band director Robert Graves The sixweek program of instruction begins Monday June 16 and continues through Friday July 25 with all lessons given at the high school building Robert Kuiper will meet with grade school and junior high musicians in the vocal music room and Robert Graves will teach high school in strumentalists in the band room Any interested student not yet registered for the summer lessons may contact either instructor for a lesson time Lakeside Laboratory First in a series of lectures presented each summer at the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory will be Dr Nixon Wilson
