Southern Illinoisan (Newspaper) - July 7, 1974, Carbondale, Illinois SOUTHERN ILLINOISAN SUNDAY WCt Play Wednesday 105000 season tickets sold for WFL openers c New York Times New York With the best players they have under contract striking the rival National Football League the 12 teams of the World Foot ball League open for business this week hoping they can con vert the optimism in their hearts into money in their pockets Unlike the established NFL which is threatened with the cancellation of its preseason schedule the WFL has schewed exhibition games in favor of a 20game regularseason schedule In other words the league hasnt given prospective fans a chance to see how bad its teams really might be before they begin playing for In Soldier Field keeps That happens Wednesday night when fivegames will be played the Portland Storm at the Philadelphia Bell the at the Florida Blazers the Squthern California Sun at the Birmingham Americans the Houston Texans at the Chicago Fire and the Dteroit Wheels at the Memphis Southmen Then Thursday night the New York Stars will play the Jacksonville Sharks in the leagues first nationally televis ed game over the independent TVS Network No reasonable estimate on the attendance at the games can be made but the leage reports hat Fire expect 35000 Chicago AP The Chicago Fire with brightest flame takes on the defensively strong Houston Texans fai a World Football League opener here Wednesday night Brisk promotion by aggressive Fire owner Tom Origer who has made exChicago Bear Carter his showpiece could produce a crowd of 35000 at Soldier Field The 55000seat stadium also is the home of the Bears of the rival National Football League Along with Carter a fiveyear pro with the Bears and Cincin nati Bengals Fire Coach Jim Spavital has a lineup sprinkled with other former NFL players carryingcredentials They include such offensive starters as tackle Steve Wright 10year NFL players guard Dave Bradley a No 2 Green Bay Packer draft three years ago running back Cyril Finder wide receiver Jim Seymour and center Guy Murdock a star Houston Oilers rookie two years ago Of brothers death Misconception Dayton Ohio AP The death of his brother is not a subject race driver Salt Walther likes to discuss Skipp Walther 27 died in a violent hydroplane racing acci dent last month at Miami while Salt and other family members watched from shore Skip was a year older and I always looked up to him said Salt straining to keep his voice emotionfree His death was very painful to me But I have to believe that he died doing something he en joyed You know the dangers of racing boats or cars every time you race He knew what he was getting into But Salt badly burned in the 1973 Indianapolis SCO his brothers death was not a signal to take up a safer livelihood I wont stop racing said the husky Dayton Ohio wouldnt have wanted Skipp to Hole in one Fred Lane of Murphysboro shot a hole in one recently on the par three 175yard No 5 hole at Jackson Country Club Lane used a five wood forthe first ace of his career as he played with Jim and Gary Vin yard of Carbondale Herschel Ellis of Murphysboro In other Jackson news retired 74yearold jurist C E Wright of Carbondale shot his age again 363773 stop racing hydroplanes because of what happened to me at In dianapolis The accidents that Skipp and I had were flukes Racing cars or boats just isnt that dangerous It was a very unfortunate coincidence After Skipps death Salt took some time off from the US Auto Club championship circuit to sort things out Some rumors started that he might retire in fluenced by his brothers fatal accident Buf Salt whose given name is David was back again for the Schaefer 500 at Mount Poceno Pa on June 30 Visitors to his garage found him happy about the chances of his blue and white McLaren racer winning the race He was running well in the race until a broken transmission sidelined him after 79 laps and he finished 20th among the 33 cars Before and after the race Salt talked with newsmen answering more questions about his near fatal crash at Indy and some about Skipp Several writers reported him callous or insensitive about Skipps death Im sorry for that Salt said I guess I tried to act a little tougher about that than 1 really feel Skipp was my big brother I loved him It hurt a lot more than 105000 season tickets have been sold by the 12 teams Fans who show up for the openers either out of starvation for football or curiosity will recognize some of the players but the overwhelming majority they wont know even with a scorecard Besides not knowing most of the players the fans wont recognize many of the new features of the league which beat the NFL to some revolu tionary rules changes In the WFL which is Me fourt professional football league to begin play in this country a touchdown will count for seven points instead of six and the one point coversion attempt will be made not by a kick but by a run or a pass from the line Among the other rule changes in the league which is the creation of Gary Davidson a founder of both the American Basketball Association and the World Hockey Association Kickoffs from the 30yard line goal posts at the back of the end zone missed field goals tried from outside the 20yard line returned to the line of scrim mage no fair catches on punts offensive backs permitted to go in motion toward the line before the snap receivers need just one foot in bounds for a com pletion a fifth quarter to break ties The rules obviously favor the offense which undoubtedly will prevail just as it did at the start of the American Football League in 1960 WFL people in cluding former NFL coaches feel the new league is ahead of the AFL at the corresponding time primarily because WFL teams have raided the NFL for talent The AFL really didnt become involved in a raiding war with the NFL until the new leage was six years old vs Japanese for
