Revolution By Ben Phlegar Of The Associated Press Detroit Feb 15 The compact car boom has ex oded into a fullscale revolution the auto industry Falcon Corvair and Valiant us their slightly older cotnpan ns Rambler and Lark accounted r almost 25 per cent of all do estic cars sold hi January This figure has added signifi ance since January was the only onthin the entire first third of e 1960 model year in which sup ies of all cars were reasonably ood Everything is changing says en Mills Ford vice president hose LincolnMercury Division is Producing still another compact e Comet next month A revo ition is underway Nobody knows here it will end The 1960 model year was bound be confusing with the entry of jur new three new corn acts and the Dodge t the start It became even more as steel shortages curtailed reduction and compounded dis ribution problems Who Will Be Hurt Many of the longrange ques ons such as who will be hurt nd whether foreign cars will windle into oblivion remain un nswered The only thing definite o far is the new size cars are elling The five compact lines sold bout 101500 cars in January gainst an industry total of 455 00 Ramblers total of 34949 put third among all cars with Fal on fourth only about 2500 cars ehind Among the five compacts orvair ran a distant third with nly about half as many sales as alcon Lark was fourth and Val ant fifth Last August Right now his figures look ood Romney also predicted the me iumprice lines would fall on leir faces and the tide of imports stemmed In January le mediumprice lines dropped 5 er cent from yearago sales totals while the lowprice lines even nth the addition of Dart were 10 er cent below last year One month doesnt make a year owever and when the medium rice lines bring out their own ompacts such as the Comet lings are sure to change Lin olnMercury expects the 0 cut into Mercury sales but de lines to estimate to what extent Compact cars from Buick Olds mobile Pontiac and probably odge will be along
