South Haven Sentinel (Newspaper) - May 11, 1878, South Haven, MichiganThe South Haven Sentinel William a item arts editor and proprietor South Haven Michigan May 11. 878. The Money a Standard of value. To the Eltor of he Sam Terai the n Lio object and the Only worthy object of discuss Ion is to discover Tod establish to Frith nod right but Tofor Taca Tely for truth and those who seek it there Ere several classes of men who do Dot discuss from that motive. There arc some persons who see and feel and know that their own private self inter sets arc at variance with truth and right. Such persons seek to hide the truth conceal it and prevent its Biog discovered. Then there is another class who hire themselves out to help conceal truth by mis re presen fat Ion. Others again who have no private interests to Subserve arc the natural enemies of everything new that they have not hem selves discovered everything that is contrary to their own cherished habit of thinking everything which does not coincide with the views they have adopted. The opposition of this class of men to truth is sometimes very difficult to account for and very difficult to overcome. Even sir Humphrey Davy one of the most inquiring truth seeking of minds sneered at the idea that houses and Cit is might be lighted with Gas. It was Only by the most persevering exertion and after Long delay that Morse could get a trifling appropriation from Congress to enable him to demonstrate to the world that thought could be transmitted by Telegraph. If Franklin bad not demonstrated the truths of his theories before he published them to the world he would have Tummy to it eco sneered and laughed at. But when a Man has bottled up lightning and got it on hand it will not do to dispute his control Over it. Y these truths which interfered with nobody a private interests were so much Ojo Osco a but May we not expect when the adoption of a truth and a right will reduce the income and deplete the pockets of a Large class of men to the amount of Money i am to pay ? Market Ftp us of the wheat. What governs pud measures the May Ket value ? Supply and demand. The Market value of the wheat it the Standard Fot the Amaat i have to pay and Supply and demand measures Market value. Can anything be plainer ? Money has nothing to do with the matter Only As a representative of value of the wheat paid instead of the wheat. It measures nothing. It is a Standard of nothing los own illustration demonstrates the fact that Money is not a Standard or a measure but simply a representative of value. Again one simple fact recognised by All that the fluctuations of values arc caused and governed by Supply and demand is ample and sufficient proof that Money is not the Standard of value or a measure of value but by Riply a representative of value. I adverted to this Anc to the fact that when values Rise Money Falls has less purchasing Power and when values fall Money value rises and asked l to reconcile this see saw operation with the stability required for a Standard for it is Plain that if one value is the Standard for another the two must be equal. Iii reply to this i will not repeat but simply refer to it and ask is it such an explanation a an honest Man seeking truth would give ? or is it such a contemptible subterfuge As any ignorant conceited blackguard would adopt to evade an argument he could not meet. Id conclusion l demands facts. Facts indeed what facts has he cited from beginning to end his whole tirade has been a string of unsupported assertions. Many of them too in Flat contradiction to the Bull Ouist authors for to does not seem to be of any consequence to l whether his statements agree with the received doctrines of political Economy or with each other or with facts or common sense. How any Man pretending to common sauce and a decent respect for the intelligence of the Community can make such a statement As that in the face of. The fact that the 412 grains of Silver wont Reu for but 92 cents is a Marvel to me. The Reader will note that it is the Doc Triue of All Bullion Isis that the value of the Silver in a Dollar is what gives the value of a dollars is the Standard for the value of the Dollar. We hold that it is not the Standard and the fact that 412 grains of Silver will not sell for a Greenback Dollar proves our position Correct.
