Smethport Mckean County Democrat (Newspaper) - January 12, 1933, Smethport, Pennsylvania
Page four Mckean county Democrat Smethport pa., thursday january 12, 1933 the Mckean Democrat entered at the Post office. Smethport pa., As second class matter Russell r. Lindsley editor Kenton a Abbey City editor Smethport Mckean county pa., thursday january 12, 1933 pork continued from Page i be replaced by county controller and which is now engaged in its last audit of the several county funds if the controller plan goes through despite the fact that that the terms to which the members were elected will still have two years More to run has Cost the taxpayers on an average less than $800 per year for the annual audit for years past. It is said that there have been Only two years on record when the audit has Cost More than $1000. Ordinarily the people of Mckean county would Welcome any move to increase efficiency and lower Cost of county government because heaven knows both Are needed badly. However there is reason to doubt that the sponsors of the county controller plan Are inspired by any such nobility of purpose. There is an unmistakable odor of pork about the whole thing leading to the suspicion that the purpose in mind is to provide a Nice Job at Public expense As a Reward to a favored political Henchman. In View of this situation the new office will mean a great added Burden for the taxpayers to carry and it is extremely doubtful if it will mean any increase in efficiency of county government. The Board of auditors consists of two republicans and one Democrat. The person Ell of county officers has always been Republican. The fact that one member of the Board of auditors is a Democrat with Power to Issue a minority report if conditions revealed by the audit should warrant it insures a careful Check up of the administrative branches of the county government each year. If a county controller replaces the auditors the people Are threatened with the loss of a minority voice in county affairs which is so essential to Good government. The action taken by the court in response to the petition presented by Young or. Griffith Herold a Bradford attorney does not make adoption of the office of controller mandatory. The move can be checked if the people bestir themselves to action and Register an impressive protest with governor pin Chot. There Are Gratifying indications that this will be done. A Good watch dog is a valuable asset but this new court House pet Puppy does no to show any encouraging signs of Ever becoming a very valuable animal. It Isnit a Puppy dog that the taxpayers need but a cat. A Good mouser to run the rodents out of the court House. It was generally thought that nothing loved a Rhinoceros except another Rhinoceros and then maybe Only its Mother. The beast is supposed to be one of the most Savage found in african wilds. An african explorer however comes Forward at this late hour to hold a Brief for the Rhinoceros. He says the beast is really As docile As a Kitten by nature and does not charge a human being at express train Speed because of hatred but due to Blind fear. That removes the last Barrier. Anyone desiring to own a Rhinoceros or a litter of rhinoceroses for House pets can do so with the utmost safety and Security. It will Only be necessary to get out of the Way when they Start running. Now the country is All hot and bothered Over Technocracy result of the super machine production age of which one of the most obvious results is millions of unemployed men and women. The technocrats theory for solution of this economic impasse where overproduction cannot be absorbed by a penniless and unemployed buying Public is complicated in the extreme. Short working weeks and ten thousand Dollar per year incomes for everyone sound far fetched indeed unless Germany a new process of producing pure Gold by a synthetic and comparatively inexpensive chemical method makes Gold cheaply available for All. If that comes to pass Why work at All the situation has been eloquently described by one expert who states that it is like Mankind working desperately to make enough Poison to kill us All. We have built the Mac flies to replace human brains and hands and now that we have them Idle human brains and hands which they have replaced have no Money to buy the production. Perhaps history partly furnishes the answer of what happens to super civilization. Marks of extinct races indicate that in the misty past there lived Peoples who reached greater development considering the Early epochs of time in which they lived than we have achieved in our time. The culture of ancient Greece brought disaster to her people and final obliteration of her cities and civilization. Rome reveling in might wealth Beauty Art and science which had even Learned the secret of the steam engine was blotted out and wolves howled in the streets of the demolished City. Spanish adventurers found the South american incas who they eventually exterminated possessing a civilization and culture Superior to their own and it has since developed that the incas had conquered and exterminated an earlier people More civilized than themselves Marks of whose engineering feats amaze explorers to this Day. Early China possessed arts and sciences including printing Glass making and Medicine and her civilization was Superior to Europe Sas late As the 17th Century and her wealth and culture made her valuable prey for adventurers of less civilized nations. The chinese possessing the Wisdom of Ages solved their problems of Over development before extermination by putting brakes on Industry and science and adopting a philosophy of Contentment and comfortable but simple living. Perhaps adoption of a similar philosophy would help America More at this time than anything the technocrats can suggest. They have graphically described a situation which we All know exit but their solution is far from satisfying. Science is Good at creating situations but often fails to provide a solution for them. He did not resort to the expedient of creating special commissions but when he arrived at a plan of action to Deal with a situation he often named some individual to see that his plan was carried out.
