No. 8 Iid Hile Ira refinery new cracking Plant will be ready in april it is understood that a Busy construction program is to continue at the huge refinery of the Quaker state company at Farmers Valley near i Smethport where a Large new crack j my unit addition to the Plant is rapidly nearing completion. The program it is said will double 1 the size of the present big Plant and eventual completion will make the a Valley refinery one of the largest of the Quaker state group. Work of enlarging and improving t the refinery was started immediately after it was purchased from the Mckean county refinery co. By the Quaker state company and has been in Progress almost steadily for three i years past. Work on the cracking Plant unit was started last fall and has been in i Busy Progress All Winter. It is expected that the new cracking Plant will be ready for operations in j april and will employ a Force of 12 or More men Pittsburgh feb. 17�?vincent Eldred Highland county club Golf professional is nursing a broken toe today with a Niblick by his Side just in Case he happens to see the mouse Quot that dome it Quot the joust with the Little mouse in which Eldred came out the loser happened in his Bradentown fla., Home. Gallup who has a Large Maple Grove and Complete modern equipment at his farm near Colegrove reported that he had prepared Over Twenty Gallons of syrup when the cold wave hit this week if weather is favourable the next few weeks will see the sugar Bushes humming with activity. Infantino opened his shoe repair shop in temporary quarters in the of Reilly building on monday and has been doing a thriving Burness or Infantino will be located there until next summer when his badly damaged business place across the Street will be rebuilt. Infantino who originally intended to repair his Frame building utilizing the old wooden front which was not entirely destroyed by the fire has now decided to erect a Brand new 2-Story Brick building. Schoonmaker former Smethport boy and local High school football Star who qualified for his pilots commission at the u. S. Army s flying school at Kelly Field Texas with High Marks last year spent the past week with his parents. Or. And mrs Paul Schoonmaker of East main Street. Lieut. Schoonmaker who has a teen stationed at fort Crockett Texa has made a splendid record As an my aviator will go on the Reserve officers list of the u. S. Army air carps. He is a graduate pharmacy of and has accepted a position with the Lilly drug co. In new York. He left for that City tuesday. _ the new Mckean county office of the county emergency Relief Board 1 in the second floor of the Monheimer building main Street Smethport. Opened on tuesday. No funds Are provided by the state for furnishing office quarters and the Relief boart of which county commissioner w. H. Halpenny is chairman must depend entirely upon voluntary contributions from Public spirited citizens. It is the policy of the state to require that All funds go directly to Relief of the unemployed which number nearly 2000 families in this county. The Relief Board acknowledges with i thanks the following donations for the new office Carrie Armstrong estate desk and Cabinet Sam Fry table and chairs s. L. Fry Rug miss Mabel Day. Typewriter and desk St. I Elizabeth a Church 2 desks Holmes a Gilfillan desk the Royal typewriter co. Of Jamestown will provide another typewriter. Articles needed include the loan of an adding machine linoleum for the floor donations of filing cabinets electric wiring and fixtures Etc. The Walls Are also badly in need of new paper and if someone will give the paper the Relief Board would provide sufficient labor from its lists to hang it. The state is Basing present estimates of Relief work on the supposition that it will be required for two More years at least. It should be remembered that the office in Smethport is Headquarters for the entire county not a strictly local proposition although Smethport people will undoubtedly be glad to give everything possible to its equipment and maintenance. Branch offices Are being established in Kane Bradford and other county towns. County treasurer Bouton to be operated on today county treasurer e. E. Bouton of Smethport will undergo an operation at Johns Hopkins Hospital Baltimore md., this morning. Or. Bouton who has suffered from a spinal trouble a for a number of years and has been confined to his bed for a Long time was accompanied to Baltimore Early monday morning by his wife. His father Hon. J. W Bouton president judge of Mckean county left for Baltimore monday night. It is hoped that the expert surgical attention or. Bouton will receive at Johns Hopkins will greatly relieve his condition kidnappers of Crosby Man to be tried St. Marys Pouge chief to be tried Fob extortion when the february term of Mckean county criminal court convenes in Smethport next monday with judge j. W. Bouton presiding and with 48 cases on the docket most important trial will be that of Dusen Versic James sweeten Tony Orazio Paul Bahar and Spiro Yovanoff charged with kidnapping. Versic sweeten. Orazio Babac and Yovanoff five desperate criminals who Hail from Pittsburgh kidnapped Nedelco. A macedonian at his Home at Crosby one night last summer. Posing As Federal immigration officers they accused Nedelco of illegally entering the United states. They forced the Well known Crosby Man to get into their automobile telling him he was under arrest and started for Pittsburgh where they informed him he would be held for deportation unless he paid them a Large sum of Money. In the meantime friends of Nedelco who knew that he was a Legal immigrant and now a naturalized citizen became suspicious and notified county authorities in Smethport. An alarm was sent out and state police stopped the car at Kane arresting the five kidnappers All of whom Are said to have Black police records and liberated Nedelco. My father who is a tradesman has been unable to obtain work for Many months and then Only for Short periods my sister and i who have regular employment find ourselves with much reduced wages and prospects that Are not too encouraging and it will be a bitter Pill to Swallow when we have to meet our yearly tax Hill which will go to maintain an Over augmented Force of Peak wage county officers frankly i do not understand Quot if the Mckean county tax payers league is established for the purpose of combating such High handed administration i for one am going to Side with them and do All i can to help the movement in my own Small a stenographer. Oil producers ask useless jobs and High salaries be reduced big Smethport Anticline Well for Cunningham May mean drilling work in Fields close to town the first test Well of the Smethport Anticline of the deep Gas Belt being drilled by John Cunningham Well known resident of nearby Rexford and head of the Cunningham a corporation which has developed big Wells in the Tioga county and new York state Fields is now nearing completion near Oswayo. The Well has just touched Sand and gives every indication of being a hug producer. While the Cunningham Well is located in Potter county the Structure it taps leads directly to and under Smethport and a big Well unquestionably Means hectic deep Well drilling operations right in Smethport door Yard. Lawrenceville in Tioga county and Smethport in Mckean Are the Only towns of any size in the Tioga pot Ter Mckean area which Are located directly on the deep Gas Sand structures. Company and an automobile driven by the plaintiff and asks damages for injuries suffered by the latter. The defendant company contends that responsibility for the Accident rests with the plaintiff who is being represented by attorney Chas mar Giotti of Punxsutawney. The association definitely decided to establish a Fellowship at Pennsylvania state College in order to conduct research experiments in securing a greater ultimate recovery of crude Oil from the Bradford Field Cement agencies of the county into a closely cooperating unit. Last night sheriff Ludwick and chief Deputy Merle Dickinson met with mayor t. P Thompson jr., and police chief Reynold florentine Here in an Effort to swing the forces of this City into the unit and obtain an even closer cooperation of City police Ostrander to erect a temporary dru6 store workmen started tuesday to build a temporary Structure to House or. W. A. Ostrander a Corner drug store destroyed by the main Street fire a month ago foundations of the a a a swept r. C. Gleason building next to or. The Structure is being erected by special permission of the Borough Council it being contrary to local ordinances to build new wooden place in the main Street fire zone it will be used pending completion of a new modern Block both Corner by or. Somewhat cheaper to buy the License for $2.00 mrs. Rogers announces mrs. Helen Rogers of Smethport has announced her candidacy for reelection to the office of clerk of the court of Quarter sessions and Oyer and Ter Miner for Mckean county subject to the coming Republican primary. New filling station Elmer Burdick is building a gasoline and Oil service station on his property on the Sronet port Emporium Road. Oil Burner in operation at county court House Lawrence g. Dana of Derrick City completed a trial installation of a Branford Oil Burner under one of the old boilers at the Mckean county court House this week the new device will he used for 30 Days after which the commissioners will decide whether or not it should be purchased the county assumes no expense for the trial installation. The device which bums cheap fuel Oil and is entirely automatic was Given a Good test when the blizzard hit this Section on tuesday. A reporter from this paper noticed a thermometer in the Large main Hall registered 74 degrees. The mishap also affected Eldred and port Allegany. Lineman repaired the trouble in record breaking time. And Martin l. Armstrong of Smethport. She was the last survivor of the local Pioneer family of that name. She is survived by three daughters one son and a granddaughter also a Niece mrs Aletha Armstrong Kelly of Elmira. N. Y. School directors protest against changing state school code a special meeting of Mckean county school directors association was held at the court House Smethport thursday evening feb 16, convened for the purpose of considering the effect of the proposed school code on Mckean county schools. By an analysis presented by supt. Lillibridge it was shown that under the new code at least fifteen of the Twenty school districts of the fourth class in Mckean county would suffer a loss through a reduction in state appropriation. Following a general discussion of the More revolutionary changes incorporated in the new code the association went on record As vigorously opposing its adoption of the enactment of substitute legislation designed to effect similar changes in the Pennsylvania school system. The association was especially opposed to the provisions placing the distribution of state subsidies on a new basis and the reorganization of the local unit of administration. H. G. Berkhouse of Kane or. D. C. Hanna of port Allegany and a. W. Sandeen of Bradford township wer delegated to attend the Public hearing at Harrisburg on february 21, Tho Date set by the House education committee. Briefly reviewing existing teachers salary Laws the association disapproved any reduction of the minimum provided by the Edmonds act. Thirty five were in attendance at the meeting.
