elevator Here wednesday two Sioux Center men had been overpowered by toxic fumes in a 15 Buttermilk they were lying unconscious in the Bottom of the pit that was covered with 6 to 8 inches of semisolid Buttermilk when the emergency alarm was the Only opening to the Cement lined pit was a manhole approximately 30 inches the pit was known at the time of the alarm to be filled with a lethal Gas of some kind and so entry into the put by Rescue members was too risky to under take without air Paks or other protective the size of the manhole did not permit a Man to enter wearing an air the emt group and firemen on the scene decided a scuba diving outfit might but where to get one someone remembered Larry local had such a Rhan was hurriedly dispatched to borrow time was being the need to get the men out fast was in desperation one of the firemen retrieved from the fire truck on the scene a Pike pole 15 it in length and always carried on the by lowering a securely held fireman slightly oxygen and this seemed to improve his very parodic at this Point he was placed in the local ambulance and As emt members continued to work Over him was rushed to the local there he was checked out by a Given a couple of cleaned up a bit and then taken by ambulance to Josephs Hospital where he was admitted to the intensive care five emt personnel Rode with him to Sioux City to continue giving him oxygen and other by now was reacting to the effects of the toxic fumes and for a time became difficult to keep and was unreceptive to first Aid Given by the emt but the diligent work of the Ems kept him once Stan was in the intensive care their work was but the Ems efforts will not soon be forgotten by those who sensed at the time that without such help a second Man would have succumbed As a
