Sioux Center News (Newspaper) - November 06, 1930, Sioux Center, IowaPage five my Home town by h b the election is passed and there was very Little excitement in our town although it sent one of its illustrious citizens As representative to the state legislature our town be ing decidedly Republican there was no Competition we often wondered a Democrat could live in our v town but come to think of it the four or five we have dont look so very Well and one of their group told us recently that he had changed colors this Man was a staunch Democrat in Bis Day but when he became citizen of this country for the second time if you can figure this he went Republican we have no Bone to pick with our local democrats and Are not holding them responsible for the hard times we Are having we rather like them for their courage it does take Cour age to be a Democrat in our town and to Tell you the truth some of the republicans give me a pain now take the last election a the democrats got Busy Bright and Early and could be seen around the voting Booths voting acting As clerk or judges of election we believe that the democrats voted 100 pet at least 270 people voted in our town of which 70 were women we took a look at the clerks Register and noticed that the majority of the woman voters were members of the w c t u applause what of the rest of the More than 600 voters of our town Why voted Only 40 per cent of the qualified voters Why did so Many republicans stay Home those Stayat homers didst do credit to their party As we said before there was no Competition for county offices that was really too bad we had the excitement during the primary at least for some offices Thev claim that even dead people voted at that time our county elected a number of new supervisors and one is of our Home town the Job of supervisor is not so bad these people do a lot of travelling and get paid for it we figured it out that our five county supervisors last year travelled 50000 Miles that a Long ways that twice around the world i for my self like travelling especially when i get paid for it it i were supervisor i would buy something for the county say in Chicago and go there and pick it out myself that would be a j Dandy trip at the expense of the 4 county later i would go and pay the Bill and have an other trip when some Farmer would Call me for a new Culvert i would go and look at once then i would go again and take measurements then i would Tate one or two of the others along and would at least make four or five trips for the Benefit of that Farmer any supervisor that cant run up a ten thousand Miles a year int Worth to be considered the More i think of it the better i like the Job of supervisor Here Ive have a Little group that deserves a paragraph by itself one of them is talking Low and earnestly i the others have a set Grin on their faces which is ready to break into a laugh at the right moment it is Sioux Center news Sioux Center Iowa i Grin of amusement but rather of other a Nudler 1 he would a Leer coupled expectation Gumshoe up to them and one Vil hear yes a smutty Story what produced the desire to Tell and listen wont be gone into Public print but re menace they All had the desire and the found each in a few minutes stronger to each other but a few moments before and strangers to each other when they part still some i sameness in each brought them momentarily together and their conversation showed that sameness if they Are old enough the expression on their faces and the sizes of their waistlines will also show it o l diverting e r communism to society than tammany Hall judges May steal a Little Money now and then they May Pervert our archaic maxims of Justice but after ail they Are democratic and Christian and do not ask the four Hundred Polo players to live on collective communism is the biggest menace to the other isms that we have to Day it is the Antichrist of Western civilization and when Glenn Frank William Green and other tolerant say we dont fear the they underestimate the potent Ial Force of the doctrines preached by Stalin a sem democratic nation like the United state Buik on the principles of individual Liberty sus stained by our capitalistic leanings to fear a move Stalin methods when i was a boy contributed years ago would list to the older people talk of this and that other things they had done would arouse our admiration and tempt us to do likewise about this time of the year the talk would turn to Hunting and its thrills we would listen to their thursda3 november 6 1930 Why 0 by h j r have you Ever noticed that it takes but fifteen minutes for Kindred spirits to get together in a crowd bring a group men together All strangers to each other and before much time has elapsed they will be standing around in groups of two and three upon analysis of anyone of these groups one will find that there is More than Chance in their being together Here two or three of them will be discussing the nobler things of life such As moral uplift not because one of them is imbued with a spirit of love for the world and Mankind As a whole and the others recognize his Superior mental Lity and Are willing to profit by his words of Wisdom but rather because they Are All mentally deficient along tile same lives and Are All Tempe men tally busybodies another group maybe talking about football or base bail depending upon the season of the year if it were baseball at this particular time it would be football if the meeting were held in the fall the reason they Are so earnestly talk ing and listening is not because some one of them is a master of the subject and the others Are Only too will ing to stimulate his thought processes by their remarks and presence so that they May share in the Fermen nations of thought which have gone on in his Fertile mind it is rather due to the fact that in their period of development the physical predominated Over the mental and As a consequence still controlled it if not directly at least in so far that it took thought of physical things to stimulate continued thought even on physical subjects has Good reason intent which uses to negate All we have when Glenn Frank smiles at the radicalism of his students he is Only establishing an individualism which communism would convert into dog like submit Tance were it but Given the Chance abstractly communism May be viewed with is much truth and much american society is individualistic we have inconsistently but practically adopted enough of socialism to remove the Sharp edges of rank individualism what and of a Compromise could we make with communism with some conviction i could now believe that the Labouring Man deserves a fair living that capitalism perjured social rights but if i were to be shot for believing anything else Well facetiously Isay but i do want to put my heels on the table and with my toasted cigarettes bum with a vengeance the follies of Man kind socialism communism fascism Are All right for some people that glib tongued lightheaded Henry Clay made a hit he said give me Liberty or give me death of course that death is going a Little stories and decided to have a Hunting expedition of our own one of the boys borrowed his Brothers Rifle and a few bullets the rest of us had to be Content with Sticks we made our Start one sat urday afternoon with High Hopes the boy with the gun in the Lead there was a Little Snow on the ground so we decided to track our game after walking a half mile we came upon some tracks probably dog tracks which we followed but these were lost at the mile Road the wind was beginning to blow harder giving us a chill a Hay stack bought our eyes As a Fine Shel Ter for a time Hunting being Slack that Day playing on Hay stacks seemed to be More fun than Hunting so we decided to try climb on the stack the Snow made it very Slippery and hard to get a hold but we kept on trying sticking our fingers into the Lay thus pulling much of it out we were All having a Good time when somebody saw a Man coming very fast Down the Field then and there we decided this was no place for Little boys Aye started on a run for Home and didst Stop until we were in sight of Home we found we had left the gun at the stack since nobody dared go Back it was decided that a big brother would have to get it every one bang tired and hungry we went Home and waited impatiently for supper All in the firm belief that Hunting was meant for older boys Vanotterloo repair shop we give rest class repair m Cora motors tires and batteries
