Skldmore, of'Plym- outh .taking a census -which Is In- tended to bring In the largest fund informative data, for the accom- plishment of religions purposes ever raised in this county Is being seen today. Organizers, who are named sur- vey leaders are in every one of the seventy-two counties of the stite. Sheboygan is one of six counties In Wisconsin, which has been selected to take the first survey and the work of the remaining sixty-six counties will be put Into force after Us com- pletion here and In the other five counties. That means the success achieved here will be duplicated In other counties .which will be better equipped for the work, owing to It having been done elsewhere. "In other words, all eyes are on Sheboy- gan F. E. Wagg, of Madi- son, state survey leader, said re- cently, when he was in this county n the interest of the census. The work in this county, while under the direction of Rev. Skid- more, is In the hands of about ,wenty-five clergy and laymen, who are well versed in the plans needed 'or the survey Mr. Wagg when In the county saw many of these lead- ers and also visited the Franklin mission house, the faculty of the latter, taking an active Interest in he survey and are aiding it in every w ay. The religious survey here I1? a general census of the religious con- ditions and needs of the county as iart of the surveys being made by the Interchurch World movement of North America. The first part of the work consists la the organiza- tion of a county council. With that completed the actual census can- vase will begin. Rev. Skidmore has already visited many of the rural districts in the county and speaks highly of tee way that he la being received by those chosen to aid in their communities. "So cheerfully are those men and women giving their assistance that It can already be seen that the work will in the county. Every denomination in Sheboygan and the rural districts have been in- vited to cooperate in the work. Competent Investigators, satisfac- tory to all churches, will make the survey. The object to obtain a summary of all the facts relating to the conditions of every church in the cocmtr, regarding its finances, menaborship, whether growing, stationary or declining; whether it has a resident pastor; what families are included In its ministry; how often Us members are visited by pastort; what families are without pastoral oversight and other data. The surveyom will report upon church groupings, areas without Christian Influences; upon commun- ity centers and social buildings, such as lodges, granges, equity lo- cals and upon other matters which will throw light on the church prob- lems of today. This information will then be as- sembled together by the county council The findings will be laid before the leaders of the different churches at conferences where lo- cal programs to lit the ascertained facts will be worked out by common agreement. With, Day of Atonement, Significant To Jewish People, Observed Today Today is Tom KIppur, the great Jewish Day of Atonement It bo faithfully celebrated in all the Jew- ish synagogues, institutions and homes in America To its sanctity as the most important of the Past Dajs. there Is added a double elgnl- Seance for the calendar has brought Yom Kippur on the Jewish sabbath, making it a doubly sacred day, and it is perhaps the most tragic day of atonement in the history of ancient Jewry From their home in Pales- tine, from the shores of the Baltic and the Black from Poland and the frozen wastes of from every foreign land into which Jewish relief workers have pene- trated, the sad New Year message that comes to this country is ever the Jewry is per-shing." America is the only land In which the new month of Tishrl, the He- braic January, brings any joy to the Jewish population The year of 5680, reckoning from the day of Abraham on the Jewish calendar, dawned on September 25, the Feast Day of Rosh Hashonah. It was not a feast day for some six million starving Jews of Europe because every day for the past four years has been a fast day for most of them. So today's Yom Kippur fast will be all too easy for these millions to observe. The Jews in the war-racked oo tries have suffered more than any other people, and they are dying by thousands of starvation and dis- ease The Yom Kippur fast, will be little more than a continuation of the five year fast that has been the lot of the Jews in Europe Orphaned children and widows are continually being turned away from the overcrowded charitable Insti- tutions and food stations to die in the streets of Poland and nearby countries. The only hope that the great mass of Jewry will survive the coming winter depends upon Amer- ica. The fortnight between Rosh Hastionah and Yom Kippur is ob- served as a penod of repentence, during which the Divine weighs the earthly deeds against each individual before entering his Anal fate on the book- of judgment This >ear it is a period of deep sor- row as well for many American Jews. The records of Jewish relief agencies in New York show that several hundred thousands have tried without avail to trace their dear ones abroad who have been swallowed up in the chaos of war when communications were broken. These people are at a loss whether to hope that their loved ones are dead cr that it 1s their fate to face a new year of terrible suffering and sorrow Another sad phase of this ear's Yom Kippur will be the me- morial service for the dead, when almost every Jewish family in the stricken countries, together with many In will mourn the loss of one or more of their mem- bers. In view of the terrible situation abroad, Jews throughout the country have organized campaigns and drives to raise a total of In the United States under, the direction of the American Jewish Relief commit- tee, the Central Relief committee, and the Jewish Peoples' Relief com- mittee which are appropriately cul minating in many states with the beginning of the Jewish New Year tlon may be taken by the court dispose of the case in another man- ner.
