Venlng Meinesz, eminent Dutch scientist, went toChina to study earthquakes.He expected the research would be confined to the abstract, buta real quake came along and jarred him out of his hotel bedon to a park bench. *Meinesz and two of his companions were in Santiago when the recent earthquake struck the city, but all escaped safely from the hotel and spent the remainder of the night on a bench in the plaza.
