Tikva congregants had met for 1O years Thirtynine people took part in the walk 39 congregants of Beit Tikva walk with Torahs to their new temple By Brandon Garcia The New Mexican ike Moses and his flock wan dering through the desert the Congregation Beit Tikva i finally found home Thirtynine congregants walked down Rodeo Road on Sunday car rying the temples Torahs to its new home L on Old Pecos Trail a little more than five miles away Albert Natharison who carried the larg est of five Torahs for about five blocks said the walk demonstrated the determi nation and resiliency of the congregation The Torah he carried gets heavy after he said But I like to think its heavy both physically and The one Nathanson carried weighed about 40 pounds The Torah is the five books of Moses the same text as the first five books of the Christian Bible and are handwritten in Hebrew The scroll is adorned in cloth and never touched by hand Beit Tifcya which means House of Hope in Hebrew split 44 district employees buy a home By John Sena The New Mexican Cheryl Kennedy doesnt like to think about aM the money she has spent on rent over the years paying someone elses mort gage The Ortiz Middle School specialeduca tion teacher is not bitter about her renting experiences some landlords were good others not so good but she is glad she now has a place to call her own I really didnt think it was possible I 1 didnt think Id ever buy a Kennedy said sitting in the dining room of her new southside home Because of a program that helps Santa Fe Public Schools employees figure out their financial situation find an affordable home and provide funds for a down payment Kennedy is one of 44 school employees who has bought a home The program Teacherwise is a coopera tive program between the school district and Homewise a Santa Febased orga nization In addition to the 44 employees who have already purchased a home six more are under contract to buy and 13 are buyerready and looking for a home The success of the program has garnered for Homewise the Government Service Award from Neighborworks America a national nonprofit organization that pro vides financial support technical Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon promis ing that the Israeli military would have free reign to strike back at Palestinians targeting Israel from Gaza the Palestin ian group Hamas announced Sunday that it was ending its campaign of rocket attacks on Israel But another group Islamic Jihad vowed revenge for Israels deadly rocket strike on one of its leading commanders and Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas responded by canceling a meet ing with Sharon set for next week The developments came on the eve of a crucial political vote that could splinter Sharons government over last months Israeli withdrawal from Gaza Hamas had launched dozens of home made rockets at Israeli communities during the weekend Israeli forces moved swiftly in response staging air strikes in the Gaza Strip and
