me thats painting At 86 you can see around the corner Im marching toward 90 so its important to make the most of every Muth says with conviction By way of practicing preaches Muth is one of 75 woman artists featured in Originals an exhibit of New Mexico woman artists that opened last week at the Museum of Fine Arts and continues through Feb 5 Muth who is a selftaught folk artist began painting full time only five years ago although she has long been interested in art and first picked up a paintbrush in 1974 Her work appears in private and public collections including the Jewish Museum in New York the Albuquerque Museum and the Art Museum of Southeast Texas in Beaumont She is rep resented in galleries in St Louis and Cape Cod although she works and sells her artwork at home in Santa Fe Respiratory problems first brought Muth to Santa Fe in 1966 from the University of Missouri where she was the assistant law librarian Muth has degrees from the University of Michigan including a masters in library science After graduation and a year at the Springfield Ohio pub lic library she embarked on a career at the University of Michigan Law School Library where she was the interna tionaldocuments librarian and certified law librarian Mean while Muth saw her poetry published regularly in Ameri can and Canadian publications She continued her library career at the State Library in Santa Fe After a twoyear stint teaching at colleges in Spring field in the late 70s Muth returned to Santa Fe in 1980 to stay She adds that she contin ued writing poetry and painting on a parttime basis while work ing at the New Mexico State History Library Other professional pursuits in Santa Fe included teaching in Jane New Mexican Marcia Muth works on a consignment piece in her home on Friday afternoon Muth has been painting with acrylics on canvas since 1975 Marcia Muth also is working on her fifth book which will include reproductions of her paintings over the years accompanied by her commentary including interpretations of them the Elderhostel program at the College of Santa Fe and Plaza Resolana and cofounding Ellis Research Associates which provides research for writers and led to ghost writing Muth and Jody Ellis also begana quar terly literary magazine Sun stone Review and a the publish ing company Sunstone Press The magazine was published for six years and the press con tinues to thrive Although Mijth and Ellis sold their interest in the bookpublishing company in 1977 they are members of the Sunstone board of directors Lack of knowledge never kept me from doing Muth asserts I figured Id learn as I went and I As she became more inter ested in producing art about which I knew nothing as usual Muth bought oil paint and 5x7 inch canvas boards She later switched to acrylic paint and larger canvases Her early work featured factories what I knew having grown up in Fort Wayne and Buffalo and evolved to pueblo scenes Her art now focuses on fam ily and community scenes mostly set in the 1930s Im a visual Muth sug gests Im still writing but doing it through my At the same rime she continues to write a monthly bookreview column for Enchantment Maga zine The magazine a publica tion of the Rural Electrification Association began her column 30 years ago Muth also is working on her fifth book which will include reproductions of her paintings over the years accompanied by her commentary including interpretations of them Her fourth book Words and Images featuring her art and poetry was published by Sunstone Press last year Of that work she said My words and images all come from somewhere inside me from my heart and imagination They are meant to be shared with Not surprisingly Muth says she is never bored Whats my secret Never grow up Muth proclaims Everybody has something creative and they should do She admits the aging process and several physical limitations have slowed her down but they seem only to have made her more determined A selfdescribed news junkie she reads The New Mexican every day and watches her favorite network CSPAN Muth also follows a daily rou tine which includes painting every day usually three to four canvases simultaneously except Sunday Thats my special projects she says which may include reading mpstly non fiction although she says she treats herself to a mystery on the working on her book reviews and
