sister Jessica Salazar He spent his time at home watching Star Trek and when he would go to his sisters Softball games hed bring along a book she said But the shy small town kid found him self in the nations capital In May when he graduated from col lege in Washington he took his family on tours of Chris Saiazar national monuments and the Supreme Court He knew so much about the his tory of the ignites amid renovation Photos by Kari New Mexican A firefighter with the Santa Fe County Fire Department watches as Seton Castle burns to the ground Tuesday The 70yearold building which was undergoing renovation was built by Boy Scouts of America founder Ernest Thompson Seton By Julie Ann Grimm The New Mexican lames devoured the historic Seton Castle on Tuesday leaving only blackened stone walls and charred timbers in place of the stately 70yearold building south of Santa Fe A construction crew that was midway through a million renovation project was working inside the castle when the fire started at about noon but firefighters say the cause of the blaze is unknown When the first firefighters arrived the fire had already breached the buildings roof engulfing the entire structure Hondo Volunteer Fire Chief Judd Dean said It was just too big by the time we got he said Suppression efforts were suspended for about 10 minutes because of a malfunction in an engine that Seton was displayed in the homes dining room Seton was an author artist and historian Naturalist hrnest Thompson Seton designed the 32room Seton Castle and lived in it from 1934 until his death in 1946 at age 86 Ail the main rooms of the stoneandmortar multilevel home faced west and had views of the Jernez Mountains and beyond Its plaster walls were decorated with fres coes Seton who founded the Boy Scouts of America and later distanced himself from the group authored more than 60 books on nature and other subjects and left behmd thousands of paintings and drawings His wife Julia founder Campfire Girls died in 1968 The Setons adopted daughter Dee Seton Barber lived in the castle with her husband Dale Barber until 1998 In 2003 the fam ily sold the castle to the Arizonabased Academy for the Love of Learning which planned to restore it and use it as an educational building is now listed as a National Historic Landmark and a New Mex ico Cultural Landmark A million renovation project began in January Construction crews had completed about half of the work when a fire tore through the building on Tuesday The New Mexican Federal pension insurance agency suffers shortfall billion deficit could jeopardize retirement pay for millions of Americans By Marcy Gordon The Associated Press WASHINGTON The federal agency that insures the private pensions of 44 million workers is having big problems of its own hitting a deficit of billion as big airlines in bankruptcy dump liabilities With billions flying out the door of the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp concern has been mounting over its finan cial footing The agency dis closed Tuesday in an annual report that as of SepL 30 it had billion in assets to cover billion in pension liabili ties Without a legislative over haul of the privatepension system the PBGC eventually will run out of money to pay the pension claims of the retir ees of companies whose plans it has assumed the head of the agency warned That would raise the possibility of a tax payer bailout Traditional employerpaid pension plans giving retirees a fixed monthly amount based on salary and years of employ ment are now estimated to be underfunded by
