new president of tribal congress By Shannon Shaw The New Mexican It might seem like Gov Joe Garcia of Ohkay Owingeh formerly known as San Juan Pueblo would have his hands full as governor of his tribe president of a tribally owned consulting firm and schoolboard chairman But add to that the prestigious title of president of the National Congress of the American Indian The job requires work ing with more than 250 Indian organiza tions while keeping an eye on Indian related federal legislation Other people felt the NCAI presidents job might be a bur den for me but I cant sit idle for very long espe cially when there are things to be he said Garcia 52 was elected president Nov 3 at NCATs 62nd annual con vention in Tulsa Okla He is the second pueblo leader from New Mexico to win the office since the congresss inception in 1944 The first was John Gonzales a former governor for San Udefonso Pueblo Top priorities on Garcias todo list are uniting Indian Country and bringing NCAI up to speed on federal legislation that could affect Indian governments Garcia said The watchdog organization is based in Washington The NCAI president and staff com municate with Indian Country through 12 vice presidents that preside over 12 regions During each annual conference the vice presidents and top staff discuss the main problems affecting Indian Country But meeting once a year isnt enough Garcia said Theymust be in constant communication to eliminate the one sizefitsall legislation that he believes is the US governments solution to han dling problems in Indian Country We cannot turn over loath to let minimum rise to until economic study completed By Tom Sharps The New Mexican The Santa Fe City Council next month will consider a proposal to delay the scheduled Jan 1 increase in the citys minimum wage to S950anhour After a halfhour of discussion Monday the councils fivemember Finance Committee voted unanimously to send Councilor David Pfeffers proposal to the full council without a recommendation Some councilors are reluctant to let the local minimum wage rise from the current wage floor unless the results of an economic study indicate the hike wont harm Santa Fes economy The council is scheduled to take up the pro posed amendment to its wage ordinance at its Dec 14 meeting The University of New Mexicos Bureau of Business and Economic Research is expected to finish the name Lance CpL Jonathan Grant died in early May when a military vehicle he was riding in ran over a roadside bomb Funeral services were held here later that month for the father of two who is buried at Santa Fe National Cemetery When his fiancee heard that people she knew had recently been approached by someone carrying a pic ture of Jonathan and their children she was surprised and angry The fraudulent solicitors were asking for cash for the funeral but those services were paid for by the Marine Corps months ago I was very shocked that somebody would do said Eva Grant who was engaged to
