muchdebated lift By YASMIN KHAN The New Mexican After more than 10 years of debate concerning the environmental religious and community impact the Santa Fe Ski Company is getting ready to install a new mile long lift over Big Rocks to Deception Peak this summer The tripleseat Millennium Lift will open access to the northeastern boundaries of the ski area allowing for more backcduntry skiing and easier access into the ava The new lift was approved by the Forest Service in 1996 as part of apian that included a new parking lot and future development in Ravens Ridge lancheprone Nambe Chutes and to Ravens Ridge The 75acre expansion will also include extension of three existing runs Columbine Sunset and Wizard from Deception Peak to the cat walk Michael Donovan spokes man for Ski Santa Fe said the new lift is needed to alleviate long lines and to allow more advanced skiers to have eas ier access to more challeng ing runs and backcountry The new lift was approved by the Forest Service in 1996 as part of Alternative 3 a plan that also included the new parking lot and future development of the Ravens Ridge area Although the ski area is located entirely on federal land the county fought the expansion citing local ordi nances that prohibit build ing and removing trees on slopes of 30 percent But a federalcourt decision last April cleared the way for the new lift The ski company has founder Jeff Bezos made his pitch a spaceport for commercial travel into space Bezos flew into this West Texas town a few weeks ago to tell key leaders how he planned to use his newly acquired acres of desolate ranch land He also gave his only interview so far on the spaceport to the Van Horn Advo cate the weekly newspaper Larry Simpson runs from the back of his Radio Shack store He walked in and
