New Mexican (Newspaper) - January 21, 2005, Santa Fe, New Mexico Friday January 21 2005 THE NEW MEXICAN A3 Cancer ranks as nations top killer For decades heart dis ease has been the nations top killer Now cancer has taken its place for Ameri cans 85 and younger The reason is that deaths from both diseases are fall ing but heartdisease mor tality has declined more Its good news in some ways and bad in because too many people still smoke and are over weight ensuring that both diseases will continue to cause deaths that could be prevented said Dr Teri Manolio director of epide miology for the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute The news is included in the American Cancer Societys annual statistical report released Wednesday Government seeks reporters sources NEW government should be given access to telephone records of two New York Times reporters who used confi dential sources in articles about Islamic charities a federal prosecutor argued The records are neces sary to determine who leaked national security information prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald said Wednesday in federal dis trict court in Manhattan Fitzgerald said two Islamic charities Holy Land Foundation of Texas and Global Relief Foundation in Illinois were effectively forewarned of government raids when a Times reporter called the charities for com ment shortly after the Sept attacks The reporters Judith Miller and Philip Shenon are not under investigation but the source who leaked the identities of the chari ties may have broken the law he said Floyd Abrams a lawyer for Miller and Shenon countered that handing over the records would compromise journalists ability to uncover impor tant stories by means of confidential sources Medical mistakes linked to 20 deaths ST PAUL Minn Twenty patients died in Minnesota hospitals dur ing a 15month period because of medical errors or oversights including falls faulty medical equip ment and administering the wrong medication the state Health Department said in a new report The report released Wednesday documented 99 serious errors between July 1 2003 and Oct 6 2004 Minnesota is the first state to report its mistakes under standards developed by the National Quality Forum a Washingtonbased nonprofit New Jersey and Connecticut also adopted the standards which are being considered elsewhere Recall issued for doughnuts WASHINGTON A Canadian company is recalling packages of Glu ten Free Chocolate Dipped and Cinnamon Sugar Donuts because they con tain soy protein not the pea protein listed on the label People who are allergic or sensitive to soy protein run the risk of an allergic reaction Kinnikinnick Foods Inc of Edmonton Alberta said in an allergy alert The Food and Drug Administration confirmed the recall Thursday and will ensure that it is com pleted FDA spokesman Brad Stone said Products were distrib uted in the United States through retail stores spe cialty healthfood stores and direct home delivery Only products with applied labels are affected pre printed bags are correctly labeled New Mexican wire services Cheney calls Iran a top threat to world peace The Washington Post WASHINGTON Vice President Dick Cheney said Thursday that Iran is a top threat to world peace and Middle East stability accus ing Tehran of sponsoring terrorism against Americans and building a fairly robust new nuclear In an interview aired on MSNBCs Imus in the Morning show a few hours before Presi dent Bushs inaugural address Cheney warned that Israel might well decide to act first militarily to eliminate Irans nuclear capabilities if the United States and its allies fail to resolve the standoff with Tehran diplomatically Given the fact that Iran has a stated policy that their objec tive is the destruction of Israel the Israelis might well decide to act first and let the rest of the world worry about clean ing up the diplomatic mess Cheney said In 1981 Israel sent warplanes to destroy Iraqs nuclear reactor We dont want a war in the Middle East if we can avoid he said Iran denies its nuclear facilities are used for produc ing nuclear weapons the Bush administration disagrees In the interview with Don Imus the vice president made a rare admission say ing he had miscalculated how quickly Iraqis would be able to recover from Saddam Hus seins government and begin running their country The hundreds of thousands of people who were slaugh tered at the time including anybody who had the gumption to stand up and challenge him made the situation tougher than I would have he said I would chalk that one up as a miscalculation where I thought things would have recovered more The White House has been widely criticized for its postwar planning in Iraq especially its failure to pre pare for the insurgency that is threatening stability and the upcoming elections for a national assembly Bush condemned Iran as part of an axis of evil shortly after the Sept 11 2001 ter rorists attacks heightening tensions and raising the possi bility of military action to prevent Tehran from becom ing a nuclear power in the vola tile Middle East FTHE FALL WINTER SAVINGS Ladies Juniors Apparel From Americas Favorite Designer Emma James Nygard In
