considering new measures to protect voters in the Jan 30 national elec tion including a threeday nationwide ban on driving to discourage car bombings Fresh clashes broke out in the troubled northern city of Mosul where most election officials have fled their jobs in fear A military helicopter made an emergency land ing in Mosul after drawing ground fire the com mand said And a Marine was killed in action Saturday in a tense area just south of Baghdad and Iraqi officials fear a surge in insur gent attacks as the election approaches Many members of the Sunni Arab minority are expected to boycott the balloting and Sunni rebel groups have threatened to attack polling stations Prado Dam seepage spurs evacuation LOS ANGELES Seepage through a dam had stopped Saturday but most residents of Corona remained out of their homes in a voluntary precautionary evacuation Although a mandatory evacuation was canceled people were being urged to stay away from homes and a mobile home park until Mon day afternoon while the Army Corps of Engineers released millions of gallons of water to relieve pressure on the 64yearold Prado Dam Residents of the area 50 miles southeast of Los Ange les appeared to be heeding the warning The dam problems followed a series of storms that turned Southern California into a big flood zone The torrential rain triggered a mudslide in the tiny town of La Conchita that killed 10 people and dam aged several homes In all 28 deaths around the state were linked to the storms Wolfowitz tours Sumatran coast 13ANDA ACEH Indone sia Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul work will open a gleaming new bureau and studios The renovation speaks to its grander goal to expand Wash ington coverage double its staff and make a hub for Western news Given the importance of politics in the Middle especially after the Iraq war youre talking about the now almost being a regional said Hafez alMirazi 47 the Washington bureau chief and a former Voice of America and British Broadcasting Corp reporter who has covered the capital since 1984 Given the military presence in Iraq add to that the ArabIsraeli conflict and also the political reform agenda that the Bush administration addressed it makes any discussion from Washing ton really very relevant to what our audience would care AlJazeera staff members describe a bold new blueprint The bureau plans to increase its current cover age a lineup of news packages and a weekly publicaffairs program to include a fourhour nightly news broadcast shifting the anchor desk to Washington while the news cycle slumbers at the channels home base in Doha Qatar In addition the Arabic news service is adding a separate staff for a new Englishlanguage channel AlJazeera International an attempt to rival CNN International and BBC World Service which will anchor much of its coverage from Washington after its expected debut this fall Some day network executives hope when Americans are in a hotel room in say
