New Mexican (Newspaper) - February 3, 2005, Santa Fe, New Mexico Thursday February 3 2005 THE NEW MEXICAN A3 The Associated Press Jenita Jeyarajah 25 left who claims to be the mother of the tsunami sur vivor infant dubbed Baby 81 holds on to the child Hospital fray erupts after court orders DNA test for Baby 81 The Associated Press KALMUNAI Sri Lanka Give us our baby a dis traught Sri Lankan mother cried Wednesday after a judge kept her from the 4monthold boy she says was torn from her arms in Baby 81 Asias tsu nami In the disaster zones most heart wrenching custody case a court ordered Jenita Jeyarajah and her hus band to undergo a DNA test to prove they are the parents of the child known as Baby 81 triggering a melee at a hospital that led to the would be parents arrests The couple had hoped to take custody of the child at Wednesdays hearing and became inconsolable when told he would be put back into hospital care until at least April 20 the next available date on the court calendar when the judge will hear the DNA results Jenita Jeyarajah beat her chest and shouted she couldnt be away from her child that long Then accom panied by dozens of relatives and friends she and her hus band Murugupillai inarched a halfmile to the hospital where the baby has been kept since the Dec 26 disas ter and forced their way into the pediatric ward Please give us our baby the woman screamed The couple and two sup porters were arrested and briefly held by police then released and ordered to appear at a hearing today Besides the Jeyarajahs eight other women have stepped forward to claim the boy called Baby 81 because he was the 81st admission to the hospital the day the tsunami hit The Jeyarajahs however are the only couple to file a formal custody claim They say records proving they are the parents of the child were lost in the tsunami The couple and the baby will have to travel eight hours to the capital Colombo for the DNA test The Jeyarajahs say the childs real name is Abilass and he was born Oct 19 IO 76s0 96 9825663 Guadalupe al Manhattan next lo Caf Experts Bomb fuel from N Korea or Pakistan The Washington Post WASHINGTON The Bush admin istrations claim this week that North Korea appears to have been the sup plier of converted uranium to Libya is based on evidence that could just as easily point to Pakistan a key ally as the source according to analysts and officials familiar with the data Two senior staffers of the National Security Council have toured China Japan and South Korea in recent days to brief top officials that scientific tests strongly suggest North Korea provided Libya with uranium hexa floride gas which can be processed into material for a nuclear weapon China and South Korea in particu lar have been skeptical of admin istration claims that North Korea has a clandestine uranium enrich ment program One of the officials Asian senior director Michael Green brought a handwritten message from President Bush for South Korean President Roh Moohyun according to media reports in Seoul The administrations case is based on tests conducted on equipment and on hexaf loride gas known as UF6 sur rendered by Libya after it agreed to give up its illicit weapons programs The New Times reported Wednesday that scientists focused on North Korea as a source through a process of elimination by examin ing isotope fingerprints and ruling out other countries The Washington Post reported Wednesday on another potential link a canister obtained from Libya that contained the gas apparently had traces of plutonium produced at Yongbyon where North Korea has its nuclear facilities But the International Atomic Energy Agency which conducted tests on the materials has not reached the same finding and believes the evi dence is inconclusive Several experts said the process of elimination cited by the Times still left open the possibility of other sources for the uranium and did not show it wasactually converted to UF6 in North Korea The experts see problems as well with the plutonium test cited by the Post IAEA tests on the same container using samples taken at the same time the United States took samples last spring didnt indicate the pres ence of plutonium and the United States hasnt shared the results of its plutonium tests with the international agency Moreover the suspect con tainer originated from Pakistan offi cials said Wednesday The presence of plutonium indicates it was in North Korea but there is no way to know where the contents of the cylinder originated investigators said Libya put out an order in 2003 for 20 tons of UF6 in the hopes of beginning research and development on uranium enrichment But it had only received tons from the network of Abdul Qadeer Khan who headed Pakistans nuclear program for some 25 years The IAEA and intelligence launched investigations into the net work and were told by Pakistan that North Korea was the source of the uranium shipment But Khans Malay sianbased partner Tahir told intelligence that Pakistan was the source Dean likely to lead Democratic Party Knight Ridder Newspapers WASHINGTON Former Vermont Gov Howard Dean who ran for presi dent as a Democratic Party outsider who disdained Washington politics is now virtuallyassured of being elected chairman of the Democratic Party one of the most visible political insiders in the nations capital Dean secured the support of the United Auto Workers on Wednesday the first union to back him for the chairman ship That was a sure sign the support he received Monday from state party chair men was propelling him toward victory Feb 12 when the full 447member Dem ocratic National Committee votes The door is shut This thing is done Put the fork in Donna Brazile a long time Democratic political operative said of Deans likely victory The Vermont doctor stunned the politi cal world with his meteoric presidential run in 2003 and his equally dramatic plunge to defeat in Iowas January 2004 caucuses which he climaxed with a defiant scream heard round the world thanks to endless TV replays Despite his loss Deans fullthroated opposition to the Iraq war won him credit for showing the party how to chal lenge President Bushs policy on Iraq He broke new ground in tapping the Internet for fund raising and his appeal to college students brought many new voters into the party Those achieve ments kept him alive as a force in the party even after he departed the presi dential contest Despite anxiety among some Demo crats that his image as a fiery antiwar The Associated Press Former Democratic presidential hopeful Howard Dean salutes his supporters after delivering a speech Sunday on the future of the Democratic Party at the 1199 Ser vice Employees International Union headquarters in New York Northeasterner is the opposite of what the party needs if it is to win again nationally Dean has persuaded party leaders he can do whats needed Besides his prodigious fund raising he proved himself a loyal Democrat by rallying to the side of Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry last fall Moreover while Deans image is liberal because of positions he took as a presidential candidate his policies while he was governor of Vermont were fiscally conservative and pragmati cally moderate That could make him more attuned to the partys challenge in Republicanleaning regions across the country than his image would suggest Governor Dean understands quite clearly that the Democratic Party cannot afford to write off voters in any region of the country and were convinced that he will work tirelessly to make Demo cratic ideas and candidates winners in local state and national UAW president Ron Gettelfinger said The chairmanship has attracted
