Animals The pair used body paint to put leopard spots on themselves before standing topless in the cold and wind for ah hour PETAs Leopard Ladies protest fur trade on Plaza By Phaedra Haywood The New Mexican wo shapely young women wearing noth ing but body paint and black panties stood shivering on the Plaza for an hour Monday to encourage holiday shoppers to shun fur The women Micah Risk of Virginia and Erin Maupin of Arizona both 21 are volunteers for the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals With only a paper banner reading HAPPY FUR FREE HOLIDAYS to shield them from the cold the pair whose bodies where painted yellow and black like leopards created a minor stir among Plazagoers many of whom out cameras or cell phones to photograph the Leopard Ian Blessing a PETA organizer who was travel ing with the women and handing out leaflets about the ways animals suffer when their fur is harvested for clothing said the women originally planned to be completely naked for the continue sur veillance Page A3 By Andy Lenderman The New Mexican Rep Tom Udall DNJvL is demanding an inves tigation into President Bushs decision to allow the National Security Agency to spy on people in the United States without a courtordered search warrant The president has defended the move as necessary to prevent another terrorist attack hope for the sake of the coun try that after Congress investigates this program it is not shown that the president broke the Udall said in a statement entered into the Congres sional Record However we will only know the answer to that question after Congress exer cises its proper oversight responsibility something it has foiled to do for five Udall said that hundreds possibly thousands of Americans have had their telephone calls and emails Commerce will not take its lawsuit opposing Santa Fes minimum wage to the state Supreme Court The chamber decided not to petition the New Mexico Supreme Simon Brackley interim president of the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce said Monday My sense is the other plaintifis feel the same The chamber has been the lead plaintiff in the lawsuit and its decision apparently brings to an end litigation that was initiated in March 2003 when business groups filed suit against the minimumwage ordinance that had been passed by the City Council in late February of that year The ordinance has been in effect statements she made in an Albuquerque newspa per article about Gov Bill Richardson touching her She thinks the quotes were out of Denish chief of staff Chris Cervini said Monday saying the story in Saturdays Albuquerque Journal made the governors behavior sound more nefarious than the way she wanted to bring it However Cervini did not dispute the accuracy of Danishs quotes used in the story Cervini said Denish said the issue is a nonstory and a She says she has a great working relationship with the he said Theyve been allies for 20 The controversy Cervini said wont affect that
