daughter Hailey last week after arriving at Albuquerque International Sunport from South Korea where she is stationed with the Army She hadnt seen her daughter for a year While away in military single mom must leave daughter behind By Natalie Storey The New Mexican On the last leg of her 26hour journey home from South Korea BvfcTamarah Harcharik started to run her black boots pounding the floor Her daughter 4yearold Hai ley sat on the shoulders of Tam arahs sister Heather just beyond the security check at Albuquer que International Sunport Hai ley cried out to her mom as tears streamed down her face She had come to the airport her grandparents Tamarahs par ents and her aunt all of whom have been helping raise Hailey while Taroarah is in the Army Grandparents aunt mother and daughter collided in an eruption of tears and hugs near a group of security guards Tam arah wearing Army fatigues picked up her daughter saying Look at you you are such a big Natalie New Mexican Harcharik works with Hailey on a homemade book about them selves at the Early Childhood Development Center at Santa Fe Com munity College last week girl And then Dont cry dont It was a typical Christmas homecoming but this familys situation is anything but that Tamarah 23 was a single mom when she enlisted in October 2003 Department of Defense policy bars single parents who have sole custody of their chil dren from enlisting Seeing the military as the best way to get an education and support her fam ily Tamarah who was 18 when she had Hailey decided she had to temporarily relinquish cus tody of her daughter to her par ents Dubby and Mike Harcharik The result has been a legal and emotional tangle the family con tinues to struggle with They are not alone Of the women serving in the Army about percent are single with children said Maj Elizabeth Robbins an Army spokeswoman at the Pentagon who was a single mother in the Army for a short period While women like Tamarah are active in the Army their
